I read this last night and it was quite interesting. The general conclusion appears that intakes are good for vroom vroom and not too much for additional power contrary to what most people claim.

This has been discussed at great length on many forums. From what I've seen, the increases come from changing the intake tubing from the accordion-style plastic stuff to a straight plastic or metal piece, not from the filter itself. The best gains I recorded on my old car was with straight tubing going to the stock airbox with the silencer removed.

Take my anecdote for what it's worth: For the most part, I'm meticulous in my driving habits. I drive the same now as I did before I installed my K&N short ram intake. My driving is by far more highway oriented, and I religiously use the cruise control, so I can say with a fair amount of certainty that my foot has not gotten lighter since my car started sounding nice.

My average fuel economy has risen from roughly 23.5mpg to 25.75mpg. I won't say that intakes produce more power in all cases, but I don't know that, as a general rule, it can be said that they never pay off for power.

I don't however, have any data with a stock intake and straight tubing to compare to Tony's argument.
