this was discussed before, and it is the plate to cover the sensor for the DRL's. Canadian V's have a sensor there, but Nissan decided it would be more cost effective to make one dash, and have a plate to cover it instead of making a separate dash.

although, if it has a sensor it technically isn't a DRL (which stays on all the time)

my Vitara had a sensor and I'm okay with sensor headlights. (I just hate DRLs)

Thanks for the info on that part.I went out and looked at it closer and I am going to attempt to mount my antenna for my Sirius radio under that panel.I set the antenna under the plastic and I still had reception but it was a little lower then what I like so I have ordered a new piece its only $8.00 at the stealer so I will experiment with the new piece when it comes in.I will post photos when completed and let everyone know how it works.

The Canadian Versas DRL's don't have a sensor. They are on all the time. So the plate can't be a cover for the DLR sensor.

Can an American Versa SL be retrofitted with the Canadian setup for the auto headlights? If so, what would be the approximate cost?

it probably can, just getting the parts and the diagram to wire it up.

When DRD running lights were first required, it was possible to buy a kit to convert your old fashioned non-DRL car to DRL. That was 17? or so years ago, so they probably have better ones now.

well I can make a sensor to auto turn on the lights when there is not enough light, just like the one Canadians have, not that hard, but I just don't see much use for it, I usually turn on my headlights when I get in the car.

Me too. Any time of the day...I start the car with my right hand and flip on the lights with my left. It's pretty automatic to me anymore

another easier thing to do would be to wire your headlights up to your ignition, this way when your car is in the ON position, so are your headlights. Easier than buying a DRL unit, or a light sensing unit.
