i thought this was semi-interesting when i saw the video in the news yesterday, but to see that theyre passing it off as a vapor trail from a plane seem... well.

definitely no expert though. if it was a plane, it looked to be haulin arse & on fire.

anyone in a related field think its probably the case?

Could easily be either. "Missiles" don't really leave trails like that either to be honest. Not most anyway. The whole point of a missile is to damage something, and it's easier to damage something when they don't see it coming. Besides, it would probably have to be smoke and not a contrail if it was really a missile, as an actual con-trail, as they keep calling it, typically only happens to jet engines if I'm not mistaken. Missiles are generally solid fuel rockets.

If it's a missile, it's the slowest one ever built.

The trail isn't much of a clue, as the Shuttle always leaves a similar trail, and yes, missiles DO leave trails like that.

Your average liquid-fueled missile/rocket leaves a contrail... hell, most solid rocket boosters do too. Think about the space shuttle...

Some SAM systems are designed not to leave a trail.

Big missile, far away, maybe? The shuttle from a distance practically crawls through the sky, and it's moving at a similar speed to an ICBM.

I watch the Vandenberg launches from my house, less than 30miles away, and they look just like that.

"some say that it could've been a missile that was fired off by accident.
Some say that is was just some shorta fighter jet and the trail that it left behind made it look like a missile."

Definitely a possibility... the bright point of light at the top of it leads me to believe it's not a plane.
