After removing my engine cover, I found a rusty/frail looking sensor or relay sticking up near the front/center on the engine that likely needs replacing.

Wish I could figure out how to post pics directly, as I have a few I could post...But it's sitting atop the Number 7 part in this link/diagram here-

Can anyone help me identify what this part is so I can get a new one? And any reason I couldn't replace it on my own? Thanks in advance!

Just found another diagram online...Pretty certain it's "SEC.253" but Google is failing me on what it is...

sec 253 reference is to the temp gauge on your dash (NOT to the ECU).
unless it leaks or has stopped working, i'd leave well enuf alone. I changed that out on my son's 97 (started seeping), and what a pain to reseal. change out is very easy, but the thing keeps seeping coolant out.
pics of your situation would help. try postimg.org

Thank you 3Q Jay. I took it to a shop and they also thought the same thing...It's still working, and only affects the instrumentation of my temp gauge, which definitely still works. So might just clean it up and cover it for now.
