Of course the first thing I thought was "This is part of the air intake, I better not touch it." but then I did a little exploring.
As pre-previous owner had gone and replaced the stock intakes with a K&N filter, it doesn't look like this duct actually goes anywhere. Not having owned another 300ZX prior to this one, I'm not sure what the original layout of the intake hoses was. Looking at this one, however, it appeared to draw air in from under the driver's side headlight and send it into a now-deleted filter box at the front of the car.
What makes this even more curious, is that the piping that goes downward seems to link into a plastic end cap of sorts that connects on its other side to yet another hose. But the end cap, on the side of the downward hose - appears sealed off. There's another end cap/fitting on the passenger side of the car, but nothing at all is connected to that one. I'll get pictures in the morning if people need them.
What the hell is this, and do I still need it?
