Hey everyone,
My name is Michael, I am new to the forum. I'm only 18 years old, and I'm in love with z31's. I have 2 z's, an 85 2+2 and an 88 2+0. My 85 has blown heads and head gasket as for the 88, most likely a cracked cylinder due to the fact of oil in my coolant. I'm newish to the z world my very first car was the 85 fairlady z31 and 2nd is the 88. I'm swapping the engine from the 88 into the 85. I'm currently doing cylinder compression test and of course on the 85 2 bad cylinders. I'm about to check the 88 cylinders. I also want to convert to 5 speed. I need help to figure out if there are any other 5 speed transmissions that would fit the z31 n/a engine. I figured that most transmissions would need mounts, just any idea what would be affordable and less work?

There's 3 perfectly compatible transmissions that came in various years/models of z31...

'71c = 5speed version of the '71b, similar to the one used in 240sx's and other KA powered trucks or rwd cars
'90a = also known as a non-world-class T-5, similar to what mustangs use, but slightly less common parts
'30a = the beefy truck transmission, variations used in pathfinders and trucks for years, versions also came on rb25det cars

People will argue which one is good/better/best, as with all things, but unless you have a high hp/tq turbo car, you won't break any of them (just don't jam gears or overshift, be smooth and they will all last)

All of them require different driveshafts...

The standard 84-89 Z31 n/a trans (71c) bolts right in, the 240sx, hardbody and pathfinder all used a version of this trans but you need one that came from a V6 or you have to swap the front half of the case with one that did.

The T5 (90a) also bolts right in.

The 30A uses a different crossmember and might require a bit of work to get it, it's a bigger heavier trans used in the Z32 with a different front half of the case.

I can't recall if any of the trans share a yoke wiht the auto but I'm pretty sure that the T5 and the 30A have unique yokes.
