So I noticed a couple of days ago that my car was acting strangely. It was making the normal amount of boost, but the car felt like it was lacking power. The turbo also sounded differently than normal. So I go to taking stuff apart and it appears that somehow something got sucked into the turbo. The bearings and housing seem alright, but the leading edge blades on the compressor side have visible damage to them. This sucks because the turbo is a few month old S15 Spec R T28.
I have my air filter located down in the fenderwell and somehow the plastic liner came loose and rubbed through on the tire. I don't know how long it was like that, but I ordered a new one as soon as I noticed it. Unfortunatly my K&N filter with 6K miles on it, looked like it had more like 100K miles on it. There was mud visibly caked on the filter on the side that faced the tire. I thorough washed it out and I didn't find any damage to the filter, but there was definatly dirt that had made it through the filter. I inspected all of the intercooler and piping and didn't find anything.
Since I was a little worried, I tested the compression today. I'm VERY pleased to say that it was basically 200 straight across the board. It actually tested 200,195,190,190, but I've got that small battery in there and the motor was spinning noticebly slower each cylinder. After I tested the 4th cylinder, I tried retesting the 1st cylinder and it only came up to 180.
I'm going to pull the T28 off tomorrow. Does anybody know where to get a new compressor blade from? Would the turbo need rebalanced, or can I just swap in a new blade? A friend of mine has an SR T25 with a broken shaft, but good compressor blade and housing, and I've got a good CA t25, so we're going to build a wierd T25 w/a .48turbine housing and a .63 compressor housing. Should be intresting.
We're also going to dyno tomorrow so I should be able to FINALLY post up a dyno of my good ol' CA. It obviously won't be on the T28, but something is better than nothing!
