Okay, I decided to sale my truck, to free up some money so I can pay off my debts. So, I sale my 97 Toyota Tacoma ext cab, V6, 4x4 to one of my best friends. Sold it to him this last Sunday. He was driving it down the interstate yesterday, when the timing belt broke. Yeah, it broke, and were talking piston and valve infacing.

I fell really bad. I mean he hasn't even had it a full week, which really sucks. Why couldn't it have waited a month. I wouldn't felt nearly as bad then.

But on the other hand: I am glad it isn't mine anymore. I have never, ever been one to unload a POS on someone. I did give him a rather good deal on the truck. In fact he can do the work (rebuild, or find used engine and install) and he will still be coming out good on the truck. I aint telling how much I sold it for, but lets just say he would have been stupid to not buy it. Plus he is my mechanic, and we had discussed him doing the timing belt like three months ago. And he really didnt feel like messing with it then. He bought it knowing everything there is to know about it, and it's history.

So, should I feel bad? I do, but I also am glad at the same time.......

I wasn't sure what to answer until I read where you say that he already knew a timing belt was needed. If that's the case, its not your fault. And if you gave him as good a deal as you make it sound, he should be okay for any costs incurred.

That's just a part of buying used cars; they could go any day, or last forever, and the only way to know is to drive it until it happens.

Don't sweat it. Stuff like that happens.

On a side note...did you by a new truck? Like a Titan or s/c'd frontier?

about 2 years ago something very similiar happened to me, A girl who was not a friend of mine bought my Jeep while I was at school, my parents showed it to her. She had it for almost 2 weeks and the fuel pump went out. The shop quote is like $750, cause you have to remove the rear axle to get to it. My parents STRONGLY suggested that I give her the money back, even though she had put like 7-800 miles on it. I went to look at it, and ya, it needed a new one, I offered to fix it, but she just wanted her money back. It was kinda obvious she was hardup for money cause all the windows on the house she was rented were boarded up and I could see bullet holes(at least I think that is what they where). So I took it back knowing I could fix it myself I was kinda pissed at first, but I feel better overall knowing I can sleep without feeling like I ripped somebody off, or having sombody pissed off at me, I still have it and it runs good. If this guy is you mechanic though and he is not pissed at you, then I would not feel bad, maybe you can offer to help him put a new engine in when he does it, I would imagine one out of a junkyard would be rather inexpensive.

You shouldn't feel bad. You might want to offer to help find another engine, maybe even offer to help. Its up to you.

If he is a mechanic i wouldn;t worry. Especially since he knew it needed a belt. If it were me I would probly rebuild the engine thats in it. Valve job and a set of rings would probly fix it anyways. Unless it cracked the heads from the impact.

Well I talked to him earlier. He is tearing the engine apart today to see what damage was done, and see what he will need for the rebuild. He will probally have it back together by Monday or Tuesday if the dealership has the parts on hand.

He should have know this would happen. Every time he buys a vehicle it tears up in the first few weeks. I am actually driving one of his trucks, until I fix my Geo. 97 Dodge Ram. Transmission went out the day he bought it. And the cat got clogged. His low rider, water pump died, and he warped the heads, like a week or so after he bought it. Just no luck at all.

He is usually the only one that works on my vehicles. I am not as inclined, and what I can do, I don't have the patients to do. I will have to how fast working on the car pisses me off. Anyway, he was basicly just going to drive it for a few months and sale it, but he said if he is going to have to work on it, he is going to keep it.
