Over the year the shaft clunk louder and harder to the point that I regret the day I even purchased the car so I decided to do some research online. It seems GM cars clunk the most due to bad engineering and GM recommended people to either replace the shaft or to grease the U-joint. A bulb suddenly light up in my head and I took a can of liquid silicone grease and I generously spray it around the U joint and guess what? 98% of the clunking went away. Before this it clunk when I went over a bump, speed hump, making left and right turns but now no more clunking. :)

The yellow thing around the u joint is lithium grease but i guess it was too thick to penetrate into every cracks and crevices so it didn't work

Turn on the engine and generously spray the U joint. Turn the steering wheel around to expose different side of the u joint and spray.

Do the same thing with the upper u joint connect to the steering wheel. The shaft it self is hallow so spray generously inside that shaft too.

Make sure you spray it generously and let it soak and seep into every crevices for a few minute before take it out for a test drive.

I dont know why greasing the u joint work I guess because the u joint is stiff and under immense pressure as the steering wheel being turn. The clunk could be the result of the u joint banging against the shaft it self as the energy being release.

I hope this help.

Seen this post as well will copy and paste

We had a similar noise in our Versa. It was caused by a copper colored piece of metal held by a bolt that is at the base of the steering column where it goes through the floorboard beneath the brake pedal. I bent it back out of the way and finally ended up cutting it. Not sure what it's purpose is (was), but no more noise. That was a year ago.
