my stupid auto

i have a problem where when i step on the brake it wont let me drop it into reverse or drive its locked. and then when i use the shift lock button and put it into gear when i drive it only stays in 2nd to 4th and doesnt go into overdrive. is there a safe mode on the transmission and what do i do

check transmission fluid, something like that used to happen to another car of mine that had a transmission leak, it would get out of gear and stay there sometimes whenever i would break, sometimes wouldn't go to reverse or sometimes it would stay in 1 gear.

fluids fine. i just reset the cpu and its still doing it

OVERDRIVE something i have been trying to figure out for a whilealthough you see 1,2,3,4,od in a manual transmission i beleive that's wrong it should just be 1,2,3,4,5i think that overdrive works in most gears, reason being my 4sp auto (01 cavalier) with od shifts 6 times: 1st to 2nd then another shift then to 3rd then another shift then to 4th and yet again another shift. you may say that there is a problem and the transmission is slipping or something, but i have owned the car since it had 126 miles and i don't think there are any problemsi beleive that overdrive works in every gear (less first) i don't know what it is, but it is more than just an extra gear. i have been trying to figure this out for years, but everyone just says that it is an extra geargotta be something more than that right?has anyone else ever experienced this?

maybe the torque conveter keeps locking up, and you mis-interpret that as a shift.

Yea overdrive in most auto trannies is just when the transmission fully locks up in its last gear which brings the revs down in the engine, thats all.

scratch all that. im swapping to a stick and im going to record all of the transfer and probably make an instructional for all the peeps. i saw the swap for the s14 but i kindof need a little help for the s13. i SEARCH

Take a look at the factory service manual. Overdrive is fourth gear"A/T will not shift to 4th if overdrive switch is set in the "OFF" position.I dunno about crapaliers (although I highly doubt they have 6 speed A/Ts) but closely watch your shifts you will find with overdrive on it will only shift three times 1-2, 2-3, 3-4. I also don't think the torque converter ever locks up, that is why when in overdrive and you step on the gas a little the car barely accelerates. The torque converter slips until you have enough differential in speed to actually transfer the torque to the wheels...or until the ecu senses enough load to drop it down to 3rd...also why I hate automatic transmissions.
