Hey let's start It off by introducing myself.

Names Chris from Fremont, CA. i got a fastback 92 240 with a stock motor.Eibach Springs, skyline radiator, skyline diff.

anyways I recently purchased this 240 and I just found out it won't pass smog when i tried to smog it yesterday. That s the reason why I joined this forum to seek out answers.

My car pass evrything else way low but on the NO part the max was 799and I hit 2695! My car is stock clean and well maintained engine. I do have a menthanol injector kit and my cat is fine.

A probable cause was I just ran my engine the whole day for 5 mins( the drive to the smog) and now im thinking that couldve been the problem. But would that drop itdown that much? Please guys. Help me out! Reg and tags are done next weeek!!!

and i got 2 free retest. and need to get this done hopefully by today

car doesnt smoke, what could it be to make the NO level more than triple the max?

thanks,Chris

Hows the timing on the motor, and do you know if your EGR is properly working, what about operating temps? Check these things and post your results.

main function of the EGR is to reduce the level of NOx. high levels of it are caused by high tempurature in the combustion chamber, usually a result of running lean, so thats another thing to keep in mind.

799 NOx limit? Damn way more leaneant than NJ, highest NOx limit I've seen for inspection was 700 and that was on an old a** caddy. Also for your 2700 NOx reading, thats insane. I've had disgusting Ford SUVs come into my shop that you can smell coming and they pass, so you have a real issue there.

I work a private inspection facility and yes EGR is a big helper in reducing NOx, but are you sure your cat is working properly and not gutted? I'd also pull a few plugs and make sure your not running lean, when you run lean you run hotter which is what causes NOx, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe NOx increases when cylinder temps go above 2,400 F.

Edit - Also make sure your EGR is functional and has vaccum. I cant recall what our EGR system looks like, but all have a vacuum line going to the top of the EGR, pull it off and make sure you have vacuum. If you do I would try applying vacuum to the EGR itself through a vaccum gauge and see if it's operational.
