my steering wheel started to click while i was driving it

hey guys i hope u can help me, i was driving home and the strangest thing happened to me, my steering wheel started to do a very loud clicking noise it happened when i was changing lanes or making a turn, i got so worried i got off the freeway and took the streets

i was afraid that my steering wheel was gonna lock on me while driving, the noise sounded like automated monotonous noice and the noise was very similar to when your steering locks when you turn the wheel without the key, it didnt affect the driving of the car.

anybody have any idea what could be wrong? the noise came from right behind the steering wheel/steering column.

I drive a Z32 na that has been converted to manual. any inputs is appreciate it tnx
