First fix the hole in the rubber tube - this will cause fueling issues and many other testing procedures you try will give incorrect results unless it is fixed. Anything will do temporarily like duct tape - but don't drive using duct tape.
Second, replacing a head gasket is a hell of a job. Personally I hate it. Lot's of places where inexperience can really mess you up and kill the engine. If it ain't bad, don't fix it.
I would buy or borrow an engine cylinder compression tester and follow the instructions (unplug ignitor, pull fuel pump fuse, have throttle wide open when cranking, use a full battery to get good, consistent cranking). Post your results here.
You may want to make 100% sure you can get the engine running right with 100% stock fuel system. Verify you have stock MAF, stock ECU and stock injectors. Throwing upgraded items (MAF/ECU/injectors) in the mix with the rest stock will make it very hard to troubleshoot.
