Hey guys, I just thought i would post some pics of my teardown as i prepare for my build. I have lurked here for years, but have only recently started posting. I have owned my 1993 FB for almost 7 years, have had an sr for the last 4. A about a month ago i spun a rod bearing and decided to do a complete rebuild. After the rebuild is done, i am going to install the fresh engine into my 93 coupe. Here are some pics from today, damage was way worse then expected.

#4 piston looked fine here is a pic of #3 and bearings.#2 i was sure this was the majority of my problem right here.#1 This is what i saw when i took the rod cap off.

I was hoping the rods were reusable, but i dont know about that one.

Here are a couple pics of the crank, which was also damaged.

The bearings on the caps looked a little worn.

With the damage to the crank, is it still fixable? WIll it just affect the bearing grade for that rod?

yes there was a knock only around 2k rpm, We were sure that it was only valve train. It sounded like a collapsed lifter or maybe timing chain. Then it suddenly got really loud, I parked the car after that. I should have just stopped driving it instantly after i heard the knock.

what kind of noise at around 2k rpm?? You couldnt tell valvetrain noise between bottom end noise?? get the stethoscope out my man, all you have to do is listen to it...much of that damage could have been avoided...Everyone wonders why SR's get a bad wrap....

Still good luck with the rebuild...If you need anything I can get you parts for them...later on Bud

....think about it this way, now for the future you will definately know if you hear bottom end noise and will be able to distinguish in the future...Live and learn...if you dont have an automotive steth, get one...

yes, its definetely a learning experience. A friend of mine listened to it with a stethoscope when it first started knocking, and the sound was the worst from the back of the rocker cover. I convinced myself it wasn't rod knock. I was told that rod knock would have been audible through the entire rpm range. So i drove it for about another week not revving past 2k and then it got real bad. I parked the car then, and started to tear it down.

Will I still be able to reuse my crank? Or should i just find a used one.

We didn't have an automotive stethoscope, just used a cheap medical one. We didn't even bother checking the bottom end, because the noise was worst at the back of the rocker cover.

Thanks for the offer, but this gives me the excuse to get the cp and eagle combo.

that could have been the problem....I listen to mine once a week or so, just to make sure it sounds like its supposed to....a rod knock will make noise thru the enire rev range...

You will still be able to use your crank, its most likely you will have to have the crank machined and polished...this may require you to use oversized bearings depending on the severeity of the scoring to the crank...keep this is mind when ordering your bearings.....

you won't be able to eyeball if the crank is good are not take it to a machine shop and have them check it then cross reference it to the fsm

don't waste your money on aftermarket rods and pistons unless you see yourself making more than 400hp in the near future.

that damage is just ugly....

I agree with the post above, get it checked by a machine shop, or if you have the tools and know how, use a micrometer to measure it yourself and see if the crank is within spec.

It doesnt' sound like you know how though so I would highly suggest taking it to the shop.

Also, the possibility of the crank still being in good shape is very unlikely, just by seeing that damage from the pics.

I also agree that you should stick with the oem rods and pistons.
