so i was experiencing speedo problems a while back and the problem seemed to fix itself. well not for long. often while im driving around town my speedo will go dead causing the transmission to stay in whatever gear its in when it drops to zero mph. when this happens it also causes the power steering to get tight. if i shut the car off and let it sit for a while it fires up and the speedo will work fine for a few days then fail again. this has happened probally at least ten times. not sure if i should pull the dash apart just yet. wondering what you all thought. thanks

Yep, the Automatic Transmission Control Unit uses a signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (or "Revolution Sensor") to help decide when to shift. The Power Steering Control Unit also uses it to add more steering assist at low vehicle speeds, and the speedometer...well, you know!

The sensor is mounted on the transmission, not behind the dashboard. Your service manual will show the exact location.
