okay, so some of you might recall that i just picked up a ca18det for 300 plus a good condition, running ka24de. and in return i was susposed to get a good condition, runnning ca18det. well me and my dad broke it apart today and i got screwed. its got a blown headgasket, the leakdown in the last two cylinders leaves some to be desired. the spark plugs are honestly like a shade of green from all the coolent its been burning, and the turbo has a fair amount, like a quarter inch, of shaft play.

my questions are:my plan is to do a semi rebuild including, new headgasket, resurfaced head, waterpump, intake, exhuast, valve cover gaskets, all new belts, fresh plugs, oil filter, pretty much all the basic swap stuff. if i do this, i would keep the stock pistions, rods, ect. but if i do this, and put it all back together correctly, will the motor hold up? this is for my daily and i wanna do things right, i plan to eventually run around 12psi on this very motor and i want it to be able to handle it. will resurfacing the head and not the block cause issues?

also, is 1/4 inch too much shaft play for the turbo? it feels like it to me, and judging by the rest of the motor, its probably blown all the hell as well.

any help or tips or anything would be greatly appriciated, im new to these motors and you guys and girls are the best, so give me your honest opinion on what you think i should do, cause im super bummed at the moment about the whole issue. thanks, TJG

I got a perfect motor set and I still did a semi rebuild like you're talking, minus the machining. 1/4" shaft play is unacceptable. I'd try and find a different turbo, maybe an SR T25.

If you want it done right, always rebuild as much as you can afford to inside of your motor, especially if it is already out and in pieces. I would strip everything from the outside and take the head and block to a machine shop to be cleaned, measured out, and machined for fresh or new bearings and gaskets. Then you get to assemble your own clean, fresh motor and know its all gonna last.

I would do the basic rebuild you're talking about, get BOTH the block and head resurfaced. If the HG blew, they probably overheated it, or detonated the heck out of it. These motor's don't generally blow HG's unless you do something retarded. As for the turbo, I wouldn't trust that turbo at all, and in all honesty, it's way too small for the CA. I'd get your hands on an SR T25. I've got one I rebuilt that I could sell you for a decent price. If you're interested, LMK.

thanks for all the help guys and girl, i really still want to stick with my little ca, i just sucks to be lied to from the guys i bought it from, but the bright side is now it will be better then ever! im just nervous about machining the block too, cause that seems like alot of extra work, its it absolutely necessary to have it done? the motor dosent look like it got extremely hot, it was almost like the headgasket want aligned properly or something wierd?

If you can swing it you may as well add an oil pump to the list since you are tearing the motor apart.

good luck finding the sprocket spacer things. I would get these first before you plan on redoing the oil pump. They can be hard to find.

Also I have a bran new oil pump for the CA that I was planning on using but I bought another motor set instead. Let me know if you want to buy it form me. $60 dollars. I paid 100 something for it. It's OEM
