I just got back from visiting my sister in Florida. She has a new BMW 535i. It was so strange. It has a feature (you can turn it off) where when you come to a complete stop, the engine shuts off and when you go to take off again it starts back up.

I guess I'm a dummy....but it just seems liket he wear and tear on the engine and starter would be more than the little bit of fuel savings. It made it really jerky taking off too.

Sometimes I'm glad I have a simple car. :yesnod It sure was nice though.

A lot of cars are doing that now. Might be useful in a big city, but they will get you on starters (and cranking a car uses more gas than idling for a few seconds).

yeah when i first heard of that on a non hybrid car I was confused as to why you would put the engine under constant stress like that. the worst thing you do to a car is start it up LOL, especially when its a cold start. It sounds very good on paper, but im sure the already high maintence cost of said BMW is going to go up more with that feature.

I remember back in 2008-2009 when gas sky rocketed, and people was always turning of their car at drive throughs or in light traffic. it was just funny to me, as all i thought was, "wow they are wearing out their starter for a very small milage increase."

But I guess every drop saved counts...

I've noticed the more often I stop shut off my G with shot trips and restart my MPG goes down.
If I have to run in to the ATM for quick cash I leave my G running and lock the door. I love having the smart key and being able to lock with the engine still running.

I, too, love to be able to get out, press the door button to lock with the engine running, and go into the post office for a minute. All of my Subaru Legacy GTs utterly refused to let you lock the car with a key inside it, much less with the car running.

As to BMW's, my favorite all time remark is still Steve the Tech's to the effect that the back seats always smell like crayons, but what's worse is the stigma.
