i had my 96 240sx for about a month now and it had a bad smell. i thought it was b/c of the oil leaking. but today i installed my short shifter and found out that smell was comming from my shifter. when i hit the gas and the get around 4 1/2 rpm the oil from the shifter spits up all over the car. why does this happen? what can i do to fix it? and when i took off the old shifter the little rubber piece was broke, im gessing i might need to replace that and that it always does that.

also it makes this weird nasty sound when it hits thoese rpm. sounds like something metal is in my engine or transmission really loud. .....so when it spits out then that is ok and im guessing i might need to add some oil? if so what kind and how much?

you check to see by removing the plug on the side of the transmision and filling untill it overflows. first though, replace that rubber boot
