I am new to the manual transmission stuff. Just bought a 96 z32 and i found out the shifter had alot of play. So I took a look and saw that the shifter hits the driveshaft. Everytime I go into gear I feel it. Any idea what it might be?

Does the shifter have up/down movement? Most likely cause is a broken shifter mount plate, it has a rubber brace that tends to get brittle over time.

^this. . . if not this than cheap short shifter was installed, some of the ebay ones are known to do that.

My bet is the shifter plate. There are a few good heavy duty ones available.
