I am so f***in pissed off.

Not even a year old, I backed out of a parking spot put the car in drive but before I got to take off she nailed me on the side part of the driver side bumper, not the back but pretty much right when the bumper curves on to the side of the car....the piece of bumper right over the mud guard.

Its not drastic, the side part of the bumper got cliped off, meaning its not clipped on, I can see the clips to clip it on to the body, the bumper is a bit bent right under the back fender.

Got some cracked paint, scratches and a bulge in the bumper.

What's the deal on bumber repair ?? Can these be repaired to look like new again...its just gonna kill me if it can't.

I'm bringing it to the dealership who by the way has a great body shop reputation around town...they do the work for about three other dealerships around.

Another thing...anything to worry about internally, like suspension parts getting touched etc...it was a very minimal contact, I went underneath the car and noticed that there's not much of anything part wise on the other side of that part of the bumper, just empty...but I'm always on the lookout for issues.

It really depends on how bad the bumper got hit as to if they can repair it or not. If it has deep gouges, it will have to be replaced. But if they're not too deep (like, 1/8"?) they can be filled. But since it's plastic, it's harder to do, and generally not recommended because in the case of another impact (even if it's just a small one with no damage) the whole bumper will flex, and the bondo will not, so it'll crack; ruining the repair. Most shops will repair it again under warranty in my experience though.

But yes, assuming the bumper can be repaired, it can be repainted to look like brand new. I backed into a vehicle with mine a little less than a year ago, and the shop made it look brand new again...minus the black plastic part on the bottom which got scratched some because that cannot be repaired. You would have to replace the whole bumper if the black plastic part on the bottom of the bumper got damaged. But of course, as to it looking good as new, that depends on the shop. My family has had to take one of our cars back to a shop three times, and were never satisfied with the job they did. If the color didn't match, the paint was cracking. But it sounds like you're using a reputable shop, so it shouldn't be an issue.

By the way, mine is a Venom Red, and the shop had no problems matching the paint.

As far as other damage goes, since the body shop you're taking to is your dealer, you could always ask them to inspect the vehicle for you too and make sure everything checks out.

Couz, I've removed my bumper last year after a minor ding, there isn't much behind there to worry about. All of the critical stuff (suspension, muffler) is well underneath the car. You have to ding it pretty hard to even touch the sheet metal in behind as there is a 2-5" air gap.

Read the Backup Sensor thread, there are some photos there:

Thanks very much Nick...appreciate it.

Its a minor damage, but I want it looking new, mine is silver.

It definitely got bent a tad and I find I'm skeptical on how they reshape plastic to take the bend out.

Anyways, these guys are really good, they do body work for the local Lexus, Volvo,Toyota and obviously the same Infiniti at the dealership.

I figure if they're good enough to work on Lexus's its good enough for my Rogue.

Sorry for the accident but if somebody would hit me in a bumper I would say: "WOOHOO!!!"...Time for the "Krom Bumpers".

Lol...in a way I put a positive spin on it because that was the only area on the whole car that had a scratch from nicking a wall while backing up, so that'll be done too.

As for Krom bumpers..thanks for the suggestion.

Bumper covers are typically just replaced in my experience.

nds an evaluater to check my damage and comes up with an estimate and sends the estimate to my body shop of choice (mine is Spinelli Nissan) and they do the work.

How much do new bumbers cost anyway ?

I've had my bumper hit which resulted in minor scratches. I took it to the body shop that does all the work for all the cars in the automall I got my car from and they quoted me $800 for the bumper to be replaced.

Of course this price was given knowing that I was going to go through insurance, but I'm sure they'd give you a break if you decide to pay for it out of your own pocket (or the pocket of the person that hit you)

With insurance nowadays, I decided I could live with a few scratches and opted not to get it replaced.

I somewhat got good news today, an evaluater is coming monday to see the damage but the agent I spoke to today said it looks like it won't be my fault, which it wasn't...but that will all be determined after an investigation.

I'm not sure they'll recommend a new bumper because its pretty minor but if its only $800 I hope they go with the new bumper.

I have no idea how any of this works...do i get a say in how this is fixed or do i have to abide by their decision in how its repaired??

It depends how you go about fixing your bumper whether you're paying for this yourself or going through your insurer.

In my experience, most insurers try to limit the amount they have to pay out and in most cases if the damage isn't that great, they will just pay for repairs instead of a full replacement.

My problem with insurance (not sure if this applies to you), but every claim you make regardless if you're at fault or not can be a negative contributing factor to your insurance rates. It's bizarre how it works because you get insurance in case anything happens, but then you end up getting charged a higher premium even IF YOU'RE NOT AT FAULT! Because of this, I try to not get my insurance involved.

On the other hand, if you were able to work out a deal with the person who hit you, then I would just get the bumper replaced and have that person pay for the invoice.

Well it looks like I won't be responsible.

But I just want it fixed like new.

Anyone know how much a new bumper costs...what are we talking $250 to $300?

More than that, the rear bumper cover is around 300 bucks plus paint would probably be at least another 3 or 400, grand total 6 or 700 bucks, and that's just the cover, not any of the structural components of the bumper. These things get up over a thousand bucks in a hurry.

Anyway, you're not paying for it so thats good. And don't worry, good body mechanics are amazing, regardless if they replace or repair, you'll be amazed at how perfect the job will be, you won't ever be able to tell it's been damaged. So just chill and relax man, it'll be ok!!!

Yup, insurance is all about assessing and managing risk... the risk of having to pay out a claim! They are run by bean counters after all. There are many ways they assess your 'risk':

- Claims history, even if you are not at fault- Theft rate of your vehicle- Age- Proximity to a big city and the number of accidents/thefts in the area

My wife was driving our Rogue on Thursday and someone pulled out in front of her and she tried to miss him by cutting to the right but clipped the drivers rear side with our drivers front. He was pulling out of a drive and making a left turn, however, you can't make a left turn because of a cement median strip. So who knows, I guess he just planned to jump it!
He got cited and looks like our Rogue will need a new front bumper, hood, left quarter panel, left headlight and whatever is else is not visible yet.
She was shaken up and now has a sore elbow, shoulder and chest pain. No good since she had triple bypass surgery a few years ago.

I had an embarrassing run in the other day...

I had to swerve to avoid rear ending another car (totally my fault). I just missed the other car, but took out a wooden sign post. Fortunately I smacked it dead center on the front license plate. No damage! ;)

I called the city and they repaired the sign no questions asked.

I got lucky...

That's very responsible of you. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of people would not have bothered calling and informing anyone about the sign they took out, lol.
But yeah, even though cars look better w/o the front license plate, I've done something similar back when I had my Dodge Ram...tried to pull a u-turn in a parking lot, wasn't gonna make it, and smacked the stop sign dead center with the license plate bracket, lol.

I arrived at my Nissan dealership Monday morning at 9:15am. Took Delivery of my new Rogue around 4:30pm that afternoon (had to come back with insurance info).

Was hit in a similar fashion to rjchoops' incident at 2:15pm today (wed.). It was snowing and a new neighbor was driving somewhere he shouldn't have been, in this car in the parking lot of our complex which is on a decent hill. He was coming in around a car instead of going down the other lane where he belonged. He didn't see me and I didn't see him until it was too late. We were only doing 10mph but I was going uphill so I had more momentum.

His 2002 Town & Country van has a busted headlight.

My 2-day-old Rogue looks like this. Driver-side door opens about 40% of it's normal ability before it hits the bent fender and stops. Headlights are crooked and when driving straight down the road the steering wheel is no longer straight but about 2 inches to the left. Progressive scheduled my estimate for Friday morning but it sounds like this is going to be a major repair. I did get the Exterior Plus Protection package but I don't think it'll cover dents this large.

Image

Really sucks because I bought this car for my imminent move to Las Vegas (from Cleveland). Looks like that's going to have to wait...

That is pretty harsh, I'm sure everybody here feels for you!! It's always tough to swallow that first scratch or ding on a new vehicle, but 2 days in and some fairly major body damage, now that is bad luck!

The good news is most body shops are amazing and able to work miracles, they'll have your Rogue looking as good as new soon I'm sure!

Yeah it's really annoying. First new car and this happened...

Estimate is currently at $3,432. Bumper, fender, wheel and some underparts need replaced, door needs worked on...Hopefully it only takes a week to get fixed. It's 40 degrees in Vegas right now which sounds cold until you realize it's 7 degrees here in Cleveland right now...
