1999 Infinity QX4

My new to me Infinity QX-4 driver's bright beam is always on when:

1) Headlight switch OFF
1) Engine running.

If you turn the headlight switch ON, all lights are normal, and the left beam ONLY comes on when high beam is selected.

If you turn the engine OFF (Ignition on) the left high beam goes out (but as soon as the engine is actually started, the left high beam comes on again w/ the headlight switch off).

It is as if the US car had a daytime running light, but only the left side, and only the high beam.

Otherwise, the lights work perfectly normally.

Anybody have this happen?

Thanks,
Bob

Did you mean left high or low beam here?

This hasn't happened to me, but part of it sounds like a goofy connection due to
- a bad light switch
- a jumped connection at the headlight somehow (is the wiring ok, any accidents or repairs there?)

For giggles switch the headlamp relays to see if the problem jumps to the other side.

Yep, the left high beam is (almost) always ON with the H/L switch OFF and the engine running.

With the engine NOT running, or the H/L switch in low beam (eng running or not) that high beam is OFF as it should be.

If the H/L switch is any position except OFF (eng running or not) the left high beam is OFF. In OFF, with the engine running, the L high beam is usually (but not always) ON.

Swapped the relays-no change. In fact, w/ both relays out the low beams are inoperative, but the high beams will still work if selected (or in the case of the switch off, the left high beam will usually be on). I gather the high beams are NOT wired through the headlight relays?

Very strange-

If I had a circuit diagram showing how the H/Ls are wired, I could maybe figure it out?

That is strange. The fact that that high beam isn't always on makes me think there's a short somewhere... or a reverse short that almost always completes the circuit then once in a while lets go? :gotme

The FSM found here should help with the schematics.
Start with the index section, which tells you what all is included within. http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/nissan ... nuals.html

I agree about the "always" part.

After start, the L H/L doesn't always come on, but once it does it never goes out until the engine stops running when something "resets."

I'll let the group know when I solve it, but it appears from the lack of responses this isn't a common failure mode.

Thanks,
Bob

PS I just realized I posted incorrectly. It is the LEFT H/L that is doing this. I guess staring at the front (where the L H/L is on MY right side facing the vehicle) caused me to incorrectly identify the proper light, though I'm sure both sides are wired symmetrically. Hopefully the wiring schematic will make it all clear.
