When looking for a timing belt with a certain number of teeth, parts stores can find out how many teeth on each belt and you can order one that is just the write length.Although I believe I read about the Audi belt somewhere, which made it that much easier for me. I just verified the number of teeth and ordered it.

Here is a small but crappy update. I've been driving and street tuning the car. It's been running really good, but it had a decent oil leak at the front seal in the oi pump. I didn't pay much attention as I drove it, I just had to wipe it up off the garage floor every once in a while.I finally get to the dyno to do a full tune and the front oil seal fails completely. I had oil literally running out of the seal at the oil pump.

Never even did one power pull. We spent an hour on the dyno tuning obscure off boost cells, and were working our way up to the high load/ high rpm cells, but never made it there.

So... now it looks like the motor has to come back out to replace the oil pump seal or the entire pump depending on if it's a seal or a crack in the pump. Thankfully I never lost oil pressure, and the motor and rotating assembly are fine. Just sucks to have to pull the motor again.

I'm not sure. I can only guess that I nicked the seal when I installed it the last time. Also, I didn't replace the seal when I built the RB30, I just reinstalled the same pump and seal that came off my RB25 crank.

I know, that would be nice. Not sure if I can spend the money on a balancer though, I wish I could.

ah, fair enough.degree wheels are cheap/free even if you look around...i think the investment in an exhaust cam gear and for you to modify the stock intake gear would be worth your time.

Haven't had time to pull the motor yet. We are trying to sell our house at the moment, so i can't tear up the garage. I'm guessing I won't be able to pull it til Monday or Tuesday next week.

That.. sucks dude, but at least you didn't damage anything. It's about the best results you could have hoped for, given the situation.

Autodyne 30? I was working with one of those recently...

I wonder if you lost your metal spring in the seal on install, I found it pretty fussy to slide to the new crack seal on w/o the spring wanting to pop out. But with patience and a few tries I got it on.

Good luck.

gotta make sure you engage the little lip on the bottom of the crank snout first before you try to push it into place...else its nothing but a headache.

I got the motor out and the oil pump off this weekend. It was not hard finding the damage. It appears when pressing the new oil seal in, that I didn't press it in far enough and it rubbed on the timing belt guide plate.

I have a new oil pump with a seal already in it going back on, so I won't be screwing this one up. My metal timing belt guide plate is all bend to hell though and I"m not sure what shape it's supposed to be in anymore. Is it just supposed to be perfectly flat?

backing plate is supposed to be flat, the front plate has a curve to keep the belt in place.i may or may not have a plate in the garage...dunno if i do but if you need it i'll see if i can find it... might be in poor shape tho.

Both of the plates are convex but should be generally flat. Maybe yours was out of whack and was rubbing.

Yeah, I think it was a combination of that plate being bent and the new seal not being installed deep enough.

Thanks for the link Carl! I ordered a new oil pump from Courtesy, I wish I would have seen this link two weeks ago. I might order that just for the piece of mind.

It's too f'n hot in Iowa right now to work on it anyway, I might as well wait for a part to show up in the mail.

Yeah, I sold it. I miss it too. But I do have plans for another project but you guys on NICO probably wouldn't be interested. '73 Camaro slammed low with LSx fuel injected motor. Possibly turbo down the road. Who knows, gotta get this new house built first.

Fyi that is not the same part on the rb30. I bought the z32 plates and the holes are significantly larger than the ones on the plates for the rb30.

hey there, do you have to drill and tap a hole for another timing belt tensioner and can you leave it? thanks
cdorhout wrote:So I broke a forged piston in late July that ruined my RB25 block. Rather than rebuild another RB25, I decided to build a RB30DET instead. I had a goal to get it running by this last weekend to make a big road rally that we had this weekend and I accomplished that!

Heres a pic of the block after being bored to 86.5mm

Pic of the front of the block after drilling and tapping the second timing belt tensioner location

Pic of the micro polished crank with JUN crank collar installed. This crank ismuch heavier than RB25.

Pic with RB25 OEM oil pump installed

Pic with water pump and second tensioner

I reused my ARP hardware from my RB25 build, and due to the longer stroke the rod bolts came dangerously close to hitting the side of the girdle, so I took Darius' advice and ground them down at an angle.

Pretty pic of new Mahle forged pistons installed (on stock RB30 rods btw)

Block and oil pan painted

I wanted to keep VCT, so I had to drill and tap a hole in the front of the head to supply oil to that galley as the RB30 block doesn't have a oil source in this location like the RB25

Had to plug the hole that orginally supplied oil to VCT, because in the RB30 block there is a water galley below that location.

Beginning the many fittings required to make and external oil supply for the VCT

Cat in a tiny box

Audi 2.3L timing belt installed

VCT oil fitting supplied from my Greddy sandwich plate for my new external air/oil cooler.

Covers back on and crank pulley back on

Had to grind down the power steering bracket that used to bolt to the head, now bolts to the block. Had to grind down roughly 1/2" of material to get all 3 locations flush.

Had to grind some material off the water galley as it wouldn't allow the stock RB25 exhaust manifold to bolt up.

Ready to drop in the car

Pic of motor in the car, sticks up pretty high.

Car back on the ground, first time since July! The hood does close, but I had to trim a very small section out of the hood support structure.

The car started right up! Did an idle learn on the PowerFC and it idled like stock. Car ran perfectly out of the box with 02 feedback turned on (my wideband is set up for stock o2 simulation). The GT3076R spools much quicker and it seems like I'm always in boost. It sounds bad *** now when I take off from every stop sign and my turbo is whining already.
