I came outside, sunny morning in the crisp VA air started up my 2001 QX4 and thought it was my neighbors G35 coup. It has the sexy sound that flows from under a sports car, too bad its just a perfectly sized hole in a cheap azz rear muffler I put on their this time last year. It actually sounds good.. (until the hole opens up more)

Vroom, Vroom, prrrrrrrrr.....ZOOM

I called 3 Infiniti dealerships not wanting to get another $100 Non OEM eBay special that lasts a year like the one on there and the prices ranged from $320 to $450 per exhaust; yes the same exhaust which didn't surprise me because I make these same 3 calls every time.

Bosal lists Part# 278-713 @ $171.50. Anyone have one? I have one on my 2000 I30 and it isn't as quiet as the factory but I think its not going to rust out like the one I have now. The sound difference isn't as big a deal either.

OR

I like some of the custom dual exhausts a few of you are doing, any suggestions on that? How about cost and i want stainless steel...

In this photo I am talking about the silencer Part# 278-713

what about having a muffler shop simply repair it? that would be the cheapest way.

I could try, this cheap muffler rusted out right where the flange pipe goes into the actual muffler. This is the same thing that happened to my factory one after 8 years.

I will try simply because I have to make a safety inspection in VA by next month but good chance with Nothern VA rates they will want like $50 to weld it back.

Oh no! Those prices are just for the silencer muffler, no installation just that one part.

Safety inspection, what a crock! As is a small hole in a muffler has anything to do with safety. In Idaho we do "emissions inspections." It's OK if your vehicle has a dragging bumper, no brakes, and a headlight that dangles like a pug's eye after a fight with a pit bull, but God forbid you burn a little oil!

You actually make a good point, my check engine light is not on.. if so you get an instant failure. Even if it was wouldn't be the first time I sat in the inspection line and used my code reader to turn it off. Either way I will need to get it fixed. My finance' moved here from Chicago by way of Indianapolis she quickly realized you don't see a lot of broken down cars at all. I don't think Indy has anything and its honeslty crazy to me when I am there to see guys flying down the highway on motorcycles with no helmets.

We, in VA have emissions as well as safety inspection...

VA is tight and that depends on the particular shop, I use to have a guy sell me one at work for $20. I had an accord fail and he noted that he "could not see one of the seat belts in the backseat." It was there just down in the crack between the bottom and back of the seat.

Try to get your hands on a Ravien exhaust. The company it self is discontinued but there exhaust are really good. I have it on my R50 and it sounds pretty deep for a v6.

You could run two 5"x18 round cans side by side. Have them tacked about 1/4 -1/2" apart so they don't touch and run a Y pipe from the back of them to a single pipe that goes all the way back.

I've looked and no one makes a 2 in /1 out muffler.

My theory with the two can setup is your left bank into one and your right bank into one and then they join after the mufflers instead of inside the muffler.

The main muffler is about 20" long. The longest round can I've seen is 18". Your brand of choice - Magnaflow, Borla, Thermal Research and Development. However, the key with this twin can setup is bracing the two cans so they are like one, but aren't touching. That is how I would do it if I were looking to do it.

I think the inlest is 2.5" (x2) and the out is 3" on the stock exhaust. If you go with the two can set up, you could do 2.5 in/out with a Y pipe that bumps up to 3". Bending one pipe over the rear axle is easy, bending two in the space provided is more difficult.

Possible replacementsMagnaflowp/n 11386 2in / 2outp/n 12866 5" round 14"L (x2)p/n 12646 6" round, 18L (x2)

Borla doesn't make a round can longer than 10". All of their turbo mufflers are ovals.

Thermal Research & Developmentp/n 61425S - 6" round, 14"L, 2.5"in/outp/n 81425S - 8"oval, 14"L, 2.5" in/outp/n 81825S - 8" oval, 18L, 2.5" in/out

I have the magnaflow 11386 and love it, they are cheaper on ebay but I wanted a warranty (the salt on the roads here in winter kills an exhaust) so I got it here magnaflow 11386 , or you can try one of the vendors selling magnaflow, they are always running sales/specials. either way its a great system and very easy to install. good luck
