Ok Guys,My 1994 Q45 is eating alternators. It seems like #3 has gone out. I have noticed that there is a small motor in the top left hand side of the engine that keeps running. I didn't notice it until I went to start the car yesterday and the battery was dead, after sitting for 12 hours. I got the car jumped and was able to drive home (15 miles) with no problem. When I got home and turned the car off, that little motor was still running. I let it run for about 15 minutes then disconnected the postive battery cable. This is my only car and I needed it to start in the morning. I reconnected the cable this morning and the car started right up. It got me to work and again, that little motor was still running, so I disconnected the cable again. Another thing I noticed is that the ABS light came on yesterday morning. Could that be related. Any help is appreciated. I really need this car to last a couple more months....

ThanksMichelle

You need OEM form Joe.

Hopefully battery does meet OEM minimum standards.

Can someone tell me what that little running motor thing is? It is in the top left corner of the engine compartment. It just wants to run all the time. If the alternator was bad again, would my car continue to run like it is doing?

I'm not sure on the 94-96, but on the 90-93 there is a black cover with a couple of relays under there. It was pretty common for those relays to stick closed causing the problem that you describe. I would try replacing the relay(s) first... You may be able to isolate the problem next time by giving the ABS actuator a good "whack" to free the stuck relay...

Good Luck!

Alternators [even oem rebuilt units] are not designed to recharge dead batteries.............sure they will do it a few times but at a serious loss in durability......decreased operating life.

Good time [12 + years] to change both ABS relays and the blue starter relay and the traction control relays [if so equipt].

ABS relay failure may be telling you something about the type and status of the tires used on Q over the years...........too many ABS activations from harder than oem tire compounds [greater than 200 treadwear index].......or just number of starts, ABS tests, miles, etc.

I have a OEM rebuilt alternator you could have for $70. It's almost new.

When my alternator went my ABS, SLIP, and TCS OFF lights all came on. My ABS is fine, sounds like yours is having a problem. And your alternator is likely burning out because it's trying to keep recharging your battery like Tech said.

I don't personally have a problem with rebuilt alternators as long as they have a warranty as I have used them many times. I would guess 1-2 out of 10 will be junk. That said... I wouldn't recommend them for a Q due to the difficult R&R as compared to something like an old chevy truck where you can swap it out in 30 min. I'd rather install a used OEM than a "new" rebuilt/remanufactured in my Q. Get Denvers alternator if you need one, a new one is $307 from Joe (Scottsdale Infifnti, http://www.everythinginfiniti.com). I got a used A/C compressor from Denver and just got it installed last weekend and it's running like a charm, nice a quiet. (thanks Denver, by the way!)
