My Power Antenna is screaming

Recently when I put up the power antenna on my G20, it makes a screaming noise. It sounds like the antenna mast segments are rubbing together or the motor needs oil. It only makes the noise when certain segments of the antenna are actively in motion. I've tried cleaning the antenna off and it helps some but the noise remains. Do I need to replace the motor or the mast? Or is there another solution I'm not thinking of?

Edit: it seems that the motor/antenna is only screaming when it reaches a section of the mast that is sticking....

I would replace the mast... $10 or so from Joe...

I did a little writeup on it, but its really easy. Just take out the assy and youll take out all the belt and clean it good.. Then reassemble..

Thanks for the info-my dealer wanted to replace the mast and motor. I thought it was a little odd since the motor still works pretty well. I've heard something about broken teeth on the antenna mast...could that cause the noise I've been getting?

You will discover if this unlikely event ocurred when you remove the mast. If teeth are missing from the mast tail, you may indeed have to replace the motor. I had experience once on my Acura where the motor drive teeth were so worn I had to replace the motor. No missing teeth anywhere, though.

Most of the time the belt breaks... When i took mine it was broken in like 4 places.. You may only have one place, thus it works but screeches when it slips in that little area.....

Wow, you exactly described what I'm experiencing. It screams and sticks only in certain places. Can the belt be changed or does the whole mast have to be replaced?

I couldnt imagine just replacing the belt... Check ebay..

Whats your VIN? I can run my parts program and look up the number for you so you can browse ebay....

Thanks for the offer. My dealer quoted me about $45 for the mast. Does that sound about right?

No... Cal Joe, they are about $10 or $15, and a SUPER easy DIY job, and its fun because its easy and you cant really mess anything up, but you get to take stuff apart and fiddle!!

Didnt take me more than a half hour...

It's broken or disconnected. No noise problems here, one position.......up...1/2 way.
