Hi all I own a 89 240sx 5 spd and have 3 problems i cannot just deal with, #1 my speedo sensor just stopped working so now my govener likes to cut my fuel at 6500rpm when i race 2nd 3500-4500rpm in 3rd gear 4th gear and 5th gear when driving normally. The 5thgear sensor is already disconected. when i took a look at my ECU i saw the Yellow wire with the green stripe at the top end of the ecu the 8th one over, I cut that and nothing, govener is still doing its thing , there is another yellow and green stripe wire, but its not comming out of the Ecu its comming down from somewhere else. Can someone help my find the right wire? i think the color of the wires vary from the 92 to the 89. #2 my car constantly backfires, I did a full tune up cap/rotor/wires/plugs/pcv valve/injector cleaner/ cleaned the throttle body and adjusted my timeing perfectly to where it should be. the only thing i changed was my exhaust i have a 2/1.4 inch pipe cat back put on with a ractive fireball style muffler without the resonator, but the car backfired with the stock exhaust to begin with (i think its the injectors more or less because of the problem that follows). and Last when i let my car sit for 6hours+ no matter if its hot or cold outside, my engine wont crank over unless i pump the gas pedal a few times whitch makes no sense because its FUEL INJECTED!!! after it gets going everything is fine. keep in mind there is 168k on the motor. Hope someone can help.

How about REATTACHING the wires back into their proper places?

I get this feeling your problems are all related.

1) Make sure all your wiring is back to original condition. If you don't do that, you won't know if it is causing the problems.

2) Your car is backfiring because it's getting too much fuel, which can result from bad o-rings on injectors, bad injectors itself, bad fuel pressure regulator, bad o2 sensor, or other things that can cause too much fuel to spill into the cylinders.

Also, did you replace your fuel filter?

Could a 300zx fuel filter cause my car to get really mild backfires on de-acceleration? I have an ka24e engine

No. I think you might have disconnected your speedo sensor thinking it was teh 5th gear limiter. You need to check your injectors for leaks, check your Fuel Pressure regulator, fuel pump, TPS, MAFS, spark plugs (that's pretty basic but make sure they're gapped correctly) etc.

hey, the wire cut to eliminate the govener is for the 16V motors. IIRC it's a different wire for the 12V's. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also, if the speedo isn't working, it means that there is a prolem with the actual speed sensor. The ecu is the last thing that gets the speed sensor signal, so if your speedo isn't working, then that means that your ecu prob. isn't getting the signal either. Just a thought.....
