So before the Miata came home I had embarked on another project to keep me busy for a few months. We wanted to get my daughter a Power Wheels Barbie Jeep for Christmas, or something along those lines but I feel like they're ridiculously overpriced(especially used) and every kid has one just like it. So I decided that I wanted to build her something unique instead of buying something straight from a box. One of our techs at work told me he had a few Peg Perego Kids John Deere Gators sitting around.

Image

Both of them were rough, but he said I should be able to make one good one from the two. He sold them both to me for $50, so I figured I couldn't go wrong even if I sold them for parts. So I pulled the trigger on them and brought them home. I pretty much hauled home a pile of dirty parts and was a little skeptical at first as you can see below:

Image

But I pressure washed them and they showed a little more promise right away:

Image

Plus the kid was already in love with them so it was already too late :bigthumb:

Image

So I stripped both down completely and started building them:

I've been gathering everything together for a couple of weeks now and spent a lot of time researching, then deciding on what colors to paint everything. My original intention was metallic pink, but that was a hard color to find in a rattle can. So I put it in primer and finally selected a color scheme for it.

The color is Sonic Blue, which was used on the Ford Ranger and Mustang a few years ago. It appears purple in certain light, so it passed the cool test for a color.

Yes, I did put spray on bedliner in the bed of it :yesnod

Getting rid of that ugly yellow on the seats and what's left of the John Deere Green(yuck):

Final coat of clear on and brush guard painted and installed.

LOTS of work done this weekend to it, but still have a lot ahead too. I have to locate one new gearbox(for the drive wheels), a new battery, and install all of the electronics and hardware. I am pleased with how it is coming along though. It makes me very happy to be building something unique for my child to enjoy and something that no other kid around here will have :)

Have you seen the ones where they put in starter motors or other larger motors and Li Ion batteries. Some of them are pretty quick!

I wanted to be able to adjust the height and I wanted as little in the way as possible, so they seemed perfect

I have and those are insane. I am upgrading the drive motors to Traxxis motors once I get everything wired up and working right. They should increase the power by 20% or so.

Very nicely done. Co-worker of mine's wife works at Peg Perego, and their plant/US headquarters is just a few minutes from where I work.. :)

Well I finally finished this up for my little girl this past week for her birthday. I had originally intended to give it to her for Christmas, but she already was getting a lot of gifts and I was having a hard time getting a few crucial parts in time, so I decided to wait.

Today was the first test drive in it

Already hauling stuff in it too!

I'm pleased with the results. I think the end investment was around $125-150, which is cheaper than a new one and accomplished just what I wanted to - for her to have something unique that no other kid will have.

I decided at the last minute to get her the pink John Deere decals, because she commented numerous times that she wanted pink

Looks awesome. I had my 2yr old daughter in toysRus and she loved climbing in and out of those cars. I might have to start looking for a good deal on a used power wheels. Also think she would have fun in a kettler car with the plastic wheels wrapped in foam.
