My favorite answer was "an uninformed customer"
If you don't do your research you will overpay. If you took trucar to your first meeting you negotiate with the upper hand. It is your most valuable tool. Even if leasing.
#1 rule on leasing :
Only lease if you want to drive a car you can't afford otherwise.
#2 You will overpay because no one fully understands leasing, and there are so many hidden fees, as you found out!
I got the car for under invoice so all in all I didn't get a horrible deal... It just could have been a little better as far as I was concerned because of our long standing relationship with the dealer. I also could have afforded the monthly payments if I financed it, but coming from $307 per month for my 2012 Rogue and coming from a lease, I just didn't want to make a $243 jump in monthly payments.
Also, If you like to change cars every 3 years, it actually can pay to lease. Which is what I figured I'd do at the end of 3 years. Time will tell.
I wasnt uninformed per se. I just trusted the dealership too much because of a long-standing relationship with my family and I let my guard down
