Post

Hello everyone,

I've been on this board for about 2 years now and had until recently a CA18DET powered coupe that I just sold to fund a new project.

I have also acquired a 95 S14 that will be my new project while my 96 serves as a daily driver.

After a bit of research on what I want to do with the motor, I have decided I want to do a KA-T over the SR swap. I have compiled a parts list and with a bit of searching here and on freshalloy, I have a few questions left that are unanswered or I could not find the answer to.

1) This will be ran as a basic turbo kit, nothing super spectacular. If I can hit 220-230 at the wheels, that will be fine for me. This will be mostly for around the town tooling and the occasional blast down the 1320. So that being said, it will be a low boost 6-7psi setup.

2) This will also be using a T25 for several reasons. They can be had for a song and dance. Make almost instant boost. And the ease of the rest of the installation. This should fit my goals perfectly since it won't be a 400hp pavement pounder but will be just enough for around the town driving with a bit more "umph"

3) Cost, I figure I can do a reliable system for about 1000 dollars. That is the key word, reliable... and safe. I don't need something that runs on the ragged edge of detonation and will need all kinds of tuning to run properly.

All that being said, here is my parts list.....

SSAutochrome T25 Manifold (installed one on a CA, no problems yet)Megan Racing o2 Housing (had one on my CA, great piece)3in Downpipe from an SRT25 turbo, again at stock 7 psi boostTurbo rebuild kit, they are ragged on mostlyVarious oil lines and fittingsZ32 fuel filterWalbro Fuel PumpIntercooler of some sortAir FilterVarious charge pipingBlow off valve of some type

Since this will be going into an S14, I will have the S14 MAF still. Is this going to be enough to run 7 pounds? When is an upgrade to a Z32 necessary?

Fuel injectors.... when is the upgrade to SR 370's necessary?

Oil supply line. I assume this will be ran off the fitting from the oil sender. But what about getting a sandwich adaptor that screws onto the oil filter for a oil line?

Oil Return line.... drill and tap the oil pan... nothing too hard.

Again, with the new style SSA manifold, you should be able to use a vast majority of SR parts to make everything else. This being said, a stock SR SMIC should be enough for now until additional funds permit the purchase of a FMIC. Since the KA and SR both have goofy up turned throttle bodies, an S13 FMIC kit should be the best fit piping wise. The intercooler itself will need to have the bottom 2 tabs refit, but everything else should work out fine.

Clutch.... I've seen some people have success with the stock clutch at my power level, and other fail. I personally ran 12 pounds in my CA on the stock clutch before I upgraded to a T28 and a Stage 3 clutch. I never had any slippage issues with the stocker. Again, when is a clutch recommended?

I am planning on doing this build up in stages just like I did my CA build. Stage 1 is a bare bones setup which will get me up and running. Stage 2 is a cooling upgrade, Stage 3 the exhaust system, and Stage 4 being the power stage. If I stick to that plan, this is how the staging should work out.

Stage 3 Highflow CatExhaust

Stage 4 If neccessary....370cc'sZ32 MAFECU TuningAdditional Boost?

I promise this will be the last question in this post, but will I have to open up the motor and do rods and pistons at this stage? Again, little SR t25, 7 pounds, daily driving.

I appreciate everyones input on this and I know it seems like a lot of newbie questions, but I spent the better half of a rainy Saturday afternoon researching this and just haven't found the answers I was looking for. Again, thank you for your time.

Joe

your setup is basically like how i am going to be doing mine.

if you are not going to get bigger injectors, you are going to need to use a FMU.

and your are going to need to retard your timing. i am going to be using the MSD BTM.

so basically the only thing our missing is timing retard.

for 7psi from a t25 i would just retard the base timing to 16 degrees.

i would consider finding a cheap front mount and make piping with that. the t25 on the ka will produce loads of heat that a smic maybe not be enough for safely. of course if you get this project going soon you should be fine with the side mount living up in ohio with the winter coming.

the stock cooling system is jsut fine as long as it is in good condition. many people running 400rwhp are using the stock cooling system

the stock maf is good to 250rwhp, somtimes a little more.

i would upgrade to sr 370cc injectors right away with an safc. a 4:1 or 6:1 fmu may work fine since the t25 doesnt flow as much as most other turbos. i ran a 8:1 fmu on my setup at 9psi, never got on a wideband like that but the plugs looked perfect.

you should look at the exhuast also. i believe the t25 will choke out the engine with stock exhuast on. if anything just get a cutout on the downpipe to be a nice sleeper

just use the proper T for the oil feed line. this will be easier and cheaper than a sandwich adapter.

jsut run the stock clutch until it starts to slip. i doubt will it will able to hold your power goals though.

so you dont think the 8:1 FMU will be good on a t25 ka24det?

and not to hijack this thread .. but how do i retard timing without usingsome kind of ignition control?
