I'm one of The Bobs!

I went to get a weekend job cataloguing books and ended up with a part-time consulting gig.

Its a local book reseller with a staff of about 20 people (mostly super hot 17-22 year old girls, booyeah!), and my job is to observe what everyone does, watch their expenses, watch their use of time, watch their procedures, and document all of it.

"So Peter, you've been missing work lately..."'Well, Bob, I wouldn't say I've been MISSING it! HA HA HA!'

Then, its up to me to analyze everything I've collected, put together flow charts and income/expense reports, and from there figure out who needs to go or what procedure needs to be changed. I plan on first eliminating their redundant inventory management steps. My goal is to eliminate three jobs in 30 days.

Theyre growing rapidly and poorly organized, and moving to a much larger location soon, so every penny saved now will be of even greater value in the future. Fits into my major (Business administration) quite nicely. I get a chunk of what I save them plus a residual percentage of that amount. Should be fun! Should look great on my resume after I graduate.

Just thought I'd share.

Dude goes in to get a job cataloging books. Dude comes out as a consultant with backend and residuals.

Promotions arent looking that great. Its a fast-growing but small company and this basically puts me third in line behind the two owners. I dont plan on staying with them long term. I'm available at their disposal if they need purchasing advice, management advice, someone to develop procedures, or even someone to fix a computer.

The idea is to put it on the resume and get my foot in the door at larger and more prestigious firms when school's done. These days it seems like everyone has a degree. Experience is priceless.

Although, going into business doing full-time consulting sounds like fun.

Does "observe what everyone does", mean sit in the creepy van and watch their every move?

Does "watch their expenses", mean going through their trash to see what she buys and where she shops?

Does "watch their use of time", mean you know when and where they go during the day (i.e. Gym for workout 8:00 to 9:00, stops for latte on the way home - skim milk - extra foam, Tuesday she calls out for pizza - extra cheese, thin crust)?

Does "watch their procedures", mean ... that one scares me .

Does "document all of it", mean you'll be needing a lot of 8mm video tape?

I'm a double BA major in accounting and management... and it is taking FOREVER! Then I've got at least one more year for a master's in forensic accounting.

Have you thought about creating enough business for the company to justify keeping those three people on?Or do they only teach cost cutting in Business Admin courses these days?

Actually, that probably IS all that's been taught.

Unless it's your major, you don't generally take any marketing until junior year, lol.

I've been taking third-year classes from the beginning thanks to an academic advisor and understanding professors who dont mind if I put off the stupid pre-reqs. Lots of accounting, management and macro/microecon so far, but no marketing until this term.

I HATED marketing and consumer behavior classes... but man, what you learn is a powerful weapon to have in the arsenal.

I couldn't stand Marketing either.

I thought it was funny the day they said we were actually going to do some math, and it was like they were mentally preparing the marketing majors for having to do math. The idea was seriously intimidating these kids, and when it came time to actually do it, it was like one step removed from basic arithmetic, and they still got it wrong.

I played a lot of Game Boy in that class.
