Car: 2011 Infiniti G-25 Black with stone interior

Post

Hi Everyone,
I am a new member and new owner of a 2011 G25 Black with stone interior. The vehicle drives very nice, and enjoy the features, and really don't mind the smaller engine. MY PROBLEM IS THE PAINT JOB!!! Both sides of the car have got all orange peel on it!!! When I spoke to dealer, they had it verified with an outside detail shop, which confirmed the peel! Now I have to wait for a corporate guy to come out and verify the finish. Then I have noticed all the black vehicles in the showroom and on the lot had the same poor paint peel problem. From what I have now found out is that infiniti has changed their painting and amount of coats applied at factory!!! :nono: I am not happy, and will keep you all posted, if you have the same issues , let me know...

My '08 is not bad from a peel perspective. Black shows everything so it's not surprising you would notice it more. Little elbow grease should fix most of it up.

Welcome to NICO. BTW, I moved this thread into the G forum.

I have a black 09 G37...no problems so far. In fact, the paint is better than my 05 G35 was.

One day when I had taken my G in for service, I looked on the showroom and there was a red GT-R. I was amazed at the orange peel on that car. You would think for those kinds of bucks they could get the paint right.

My problem with my 08 was how easily it would scratch and peck.

My 2011 G37x has a higher degree of orange peel than I'd like, and reading other posts I've found that's fairly common. The hood is like glass, it's only on the fenders/quarters that I can really see it. Fortunately on Graphite Shadow it's not that noticeable unless you are looking for it at the correct angle.

i do not have any orange peel problems, in fact, after a nice wash and wax, the paint is beautiful. it scratches very easily though. very, very easily.

If I had read this stuff before ordering our '11 G37, I'd have gone with another Lexus. This shameful.

I was hoping they had corrected the problem by now, Bill.

I've had my Z over 2 months now and don't even have a rock chip....0 orange peel.

I'm sure you have orange peel, we all do. Being silver it simply does not stand out as much on your car, same as with my white one. It's there tho, you can see it in this pic...

I'm sure you are right. I just won't look that close so I will continue to be tickled pink with my car.

I haven't seen orange peel on any of my cars since I tried spray painting the fender shirts on my '48 Ford convertible -- that was long before any macular degeneration...... :chuckle:...... At what price point should "peel" be a non-issue, Lambo, Porsche, Ferrari, or ?

Bill, good point.

If it's that much of a issue then you can always lightly wet sand the clear coat like one of our Mods did their G35.

I've been reading about orange peel, and there seems to be some agreement that as "green" paints became required, orange peel largely but not universally came along with them. The upscale manufactures Bill mentions wet sand the color coat to remove it before clear coating, it seems. At our price point, that's not happening at Nissan. I don't know about the M cars.

There's a lot of controversy on wet sanding to remove orange peel among professional detailers. Many think that you have to cut too much paint to get an appreciable result.

Honda/Accura have some rep for being less orange peely than most in our price ranges. I just washed and waxed my neighbor's '08 Accura RL (white) today, and saw no orange peel whatsoever. Not something I commonly do for neighbors, BTW, but he insisted on cutting my grass for about two months last year after I had neck surgery, so it was a pleasure to do this for him. His wife's about to drive it 400 miles to look after her sick sister for a couple of weeks, so she's going off with a shiny, freshly RainX-ed car.

Probably more to do with Japanese standards as I'm sure an Altima built in the US will have a different finish as the EPA here is not as tight as Infiniti has to deal with in Japan.

I have to retract this statement. I just Zaino'd Z-Bo and he has 2 small rock chips on his hood.

I just did the sedan and it has a couple on the hood too. Nissan is very weird as to the color of their undercoats too. On my Majestic Blue Maxima, it was white so that the chips showed through like a speckled egg. On the G sedan it's also white. On my white G coupe it's black. :squint:

Found my first chip on Jezebel this week. Skipped off the grille and caught the edge of the bumper strip above it. Found it Tuesday morning, was like a little flap sticking halfway up. I pressed it down with a fingernail until I could do something about it. Went out this morning to detail the car, thinking I"d probably dot it with clear nail polish for now, and had a hard time finding it. Self healing paint--does it actually work?

The scratch on the grille is noticeable, though. Won't take too many of these for me to go blackout.

It is supposed to take weeks under the sun for the self healing paint to do anything supposedly noticeable. I doubt it will do much for a paint flap but who knows.

Will report back in a couple weeks, then. It did spend three days in direct sun in a surface lot this week--had to go to the data center to build out some servers because the firewall guys couldn't seem to get me access to the ILOs. Hate that place, middle of nowhere, doubles my commute, and the roads aren't interesting.

Thank goodness, it looks like my primer is gray. The chips are very small. I wouldn't have noticed them except I was looking real close at the paint to make sure I had gotten all the wax off.

my undercoat is black as well. it may have something to do with what the top coat color is. i'm not a paint guy so i dont know how that works.

To be honest, I didn't care for the paint on my car when I picked it up as well. My car sits under a metal halide light and it shows off so much of the beautiful acid rain and I am sure a sprinkler or two on the lot. They polished it out but it still did not appeal as I expected. After probably 5 coats of Zaino followed by weekly washing and drying and ultimate spray the car looks really good. The red absolutely BLOW'S up in your eyes when I drive. Dark primer on gas door, haven't had anything to tell me what color on the metal. Zaino is the best (posting pic's from a Mac on this site sucks! >>>Moderator<<<)

My coupe actually has a small paint drip at the edge of the front fender where it meets the door. It's really not noticeable until you are waxing it but it's there.

On the highway today I drove past a black Jaguar XJ (2009-ish) and the reflections on the doors were all hazed up with orange peel. So, it's not just our cars.

^Ours are definitely not even the worst Nissan products. Pulled up beside a new looking Titan today at a stop light. Sides looked like they'd been painted with a butter knife.
