i finally got my engine started up again after the brokem cam/timing chain incident. i had to replace the whole head with one of my spares, it took some work but i got it done. i finally fired up the beast and it started fine.

i let it idle while filling up coolant and checking minor things. i let it warm up so i can adjust timing. the whole time it was idling for about 10 mins, i heard squeeking noises which sounded like piston slap from the new overbore pistons i got put in. the squeek would come on and off, cuz i thought piston slap was normal for new engines. as i was adjusting the idle screw, the engine studdered for a sec, then shut off. i was like ???

so i tried to start it up again, it cranked slowly but didnt turn over or start. i INSTANTLY pulled the valve cover and it looked like there wasnt much oil on the cams or anything. YES i DID put enough oil in... is this the cause of NO OIL PRESSURE? arent the cams supposed to be lubed in oil and oil is supposed to be squirting all over the cams while the engine is on? if not then maybe my oil pump is bad? i keep on getting bad luck (this is the 3rd time ive got to start my car and something like this happen)

First, I totally have to offer my condolences. Second, The cams are hollow, and lubed internally. There will be residual oil in the head, but not a ton. If you are worried about the pump, pull it out, and check your clearances. If you don't have a spec, shoot me an email, I will take care of you.

While the motor was running, was your oil light on? It should go off after a few good cranks, or at the latest right after the motor starts.

Cranking slowly sounds like a power problem to your starter. Make sure your battery is fully charged (triple check that your alt has all THREE connections connected). Also, although this is probably much less likely, make sure all your engine grounds are still intact. Maybe you melted through one?

If your oil light turned off as it should, dont worry that much about your cams. With new oil and a new engine especially, oil is much cleaner and harder to see than usual. Also like chezedik said, there wont be a ton of oil sitting in the head anyways.

Engine stalling and slow cranking afterwards doesnt sound like an oiling problem at all. Check your battery, check your alternator (did it charge your battery or no?), check your grounds. Get the engine cranking to normal speed- then check your plugs for spark/fuel, etc etc.

Dont worry man, I know how it is being nervous about an engine. This doesnt sound like a dead motor at all, relax.

no no, the car idled fine as i was checking things over for over 10 mins, i even drove it around the corner (out of boost) then parked it and rechecked. then the car studdered for a sec while i was trying to adjust idle, then it shut off. i didnt even turn the idle screw at all and it shut off so i know its not the idle screw.

im afraid that i seized the motor because of no oil pressure .

the oil light didnt come on because i removed the oil sending unit and replaced it with an electric sending unit for my oil pressure gauge. the thing is i didnt wire the gauge yet so i dont know if theres any problem with oil pressure...

haha okay well that was a poor choice, but really your oil pump would have to be pretty screwed up to not work at all. The pumps are pretty solid I must say, I seriously doubt yours is bad unless someone has messed with it or its got about 350,000 miles on it.

Next time you start a new motor, plug the oil light in, or find some other method to make SURE you've got good oil pressure. That should be the very first thing you check when you start up a new motor. Very, very important.

That said I still dont think you had no oil pressure and I doubt you seized the motor.

Try cranking the motor by hand, can you move it?

The motor stalling on its own really is no worry whatsoever. The timing wasnt right, it was probably running hot, it was just start up for the first time- all kinds of stupid things could be wrong with it.

Make sure you can turn the engine over by hand (you said it cranks already by the starter so it is definitely not seized, but do it anyways), then start worrying about why the engine isnt starting NOW. Check the simple things: does your battery have juice to turn the starter? Do you have fuel? Spark? Air? Timing?

Was there oil all over the valve cover? Oil splashes around real good in there. In fact, you should see little puddles.

But if you lost pressure your valves would be clacking like crazy.

When you went to turn the idle adjustment, did you follow the FSM? There is a specific proceedure for doing this. It warns against doing it haphazardly.

Anyway, your motor cranks so it's not siezed.

Adjust the idle screw to where you had it before..??

Very very poor choice to not have any indication of oil pressure. I always crank my engine over until the stock light goes off when I do serious work. Then I plug my injectors/coil wire back in and start.

did you you any silicone liquid gasket on anything oil related such as oil pan or on the timing cover becuase silcone will break down quick (the globs on the inside) and they will seize your oilpump. I say pull the motor and check your oil pump

found the problem, 248 exhaust cam on the intake side broke at the nipple. the sprocket was spinning but the cam wasnt...

end result? 0 psi compression on the #2 cylinder...

my luck keeps getting worse... the best thing is i JUST finished swapping another head on about 1 hour before this happened.

I think something is not being done right. There is no way that 2 cams would break. If you are doing everything right, go buy a lottery ticket quick!

yes they are.

next time try a stock cam setup sunny, maybe that'll stop but there has to be something wrong if 2 cams have broken allready, don't know if its unusual but i've done like 4 cam placements and none have broken.(3 of those were on my car, replacin like 3 heads and 3 engines over the past 3 yrs, the other was a friends car i had to replace the head, not related to cam problems though)

on my last head, the exhaust cam broke, now after swapping the new head the intake side broke, i have no idea what i am doing wrong. i torqued it as specified in the FSM.

ill post some pictures of the cam tomorrow, ive never seen a cam do this.

so all the cam tower bolts were torqued in proper sequence and in stages? did you lube te surface up before you installed the cams?

I know your not a retard and you probably did everything possible to prevent this... but something just isn't right.

Next head and cam setup you get on.... crank the engien over byhand about 20 times with the VC off so you can see what the cams are doing and if there is anything interfering.

I think I know what you did wrong, you got in a hurry. I did the same thing to one of my cams when I was installing it the first time, and drove the pin into the cam, cracking it. The repair was inexpensive, but I am just glad we found it in time. I ended up breaking the cam for good again later, but that was another stupid mistake, and another fun story.

First of all I would never turn on a fresh motor without at leasting priming the motor for minute or more. Having that dummy oil light hooked up should be your priority after priming the motor.l

I actually had a similar incident happen to my sr20 after swapping. I tried priming it but the light would stay on. I still started the motor even tho the light would flicker. Started driving it around and the car stalls. Turns out my Exhaust cam and timing chain broke in half. Turns out for my Greddy oil pan i needed to cut out 1/2 inch on the oil pick up (for redtop pickups). So make sure you have a wider pickup and prime your motor with a dummy light hooked up or your oil pressure gauge (check fsm for pressure per RPM).
