This is my first time to the site. I just bought a prestine 96 Q I have been looking for about 3 months and was torn between the 95 or the 96. I know I sacraficed some horsepower but felt the 96 fit more of my needs. My question is, I will use this car for both work and recreation if I want to gain some horsepower (Just enough to leave the LS 400's and Beamers in my rear veiw mirror) where would I start first? I'm thinking an ECU upgrade but am not sure. Please give me feedback and tell me what kind of horsepower I can expect to gain.

congrats on your purchase and welcome to NICO.

Not to rain on your parade...but the 96 year is an OBDII and therefore the ECU can't be reprogramed. Things are not cheap to modify a Q45 correctly and reliability wise so be prepared to hand out at leat $500 for any mod that will give you true acceleration increase. I can only think that you might try a 4.08 rearend gear instead of the 3.538, and this will make you faster from 0-78mph, but you will lose acceleration from 78-95mph. Do a search on the 4.08...you will find a tons of information and again it ain't cheap until somebody else comes up with an innovative proven solution that is more cost effective.

While the JWT ECU isnt available for the 96:

he can still get a piggy back like an ultraemanage for fine tuning..Even an SAFC may lean him out little enough to still be safe , but significantly enough to gain some power..

This will be especially helpful if modifications like exhaust are in the future..

Fred..

PS: Welcome to Nico!!..

Guy's,

Thanks for the feedback. That's a little disapointing to hear that I cannot get a JWT. Where can I get an Ultramanage you refered to? What is your opinion of the Jet Chip? They make one for my vehicle and prior to finding this website I did not know about JWT. I wish I had waited a little longer to find a 95, my 96 is fun to drive but I really wanted the extra horsepower.

Thanks

With the increased sensors, the parameters of the OBD II probably cannot be improved upon. Just a guess on my part, but no OBD II Nissan V8 engines have after market chips that demonstrably improve performance. I would shy away from the Jet as unproven.

Now, if you want to get into supercharging or turbo charging, and have really deep pockets and another daily driver, I think you may have the perfect subject engine, an OBD II VH45DE without variable intake cam advance.

I would even think that using an SAFC or equivalent may not do much if anything....

I would look into the 4.08 personally, youll lose gas mileage but the car will be faster... Theres not much for the Q, and theres even LESS for the 96 Q... Shoulda went with the 95

turn your car back in to the dealer and buy my Q (just waiting to get TCS fixed before putting it up for sale)

It would be a hassle, but maybe they have a 3 day return policy?

Rob, after all the work you've done, youre selling it. Are you bored of your Q? What are you getting?

I'm quite happy with the performance of my 96.......I haven't been able to find any quarter mile times that are any faster for a stock car.

yeah...car will be up for sale tomorrow on NICO classifieds and will describe details later on why it is for sale......just trying to get everything fixed before it goes up for sale so the new owner is set to drive and enjoy it. I have grease monkey hands right now from the last thing to install a working TCS actuator for which my big hands can't get a damn clip off so I can install the new actuator. btw...the fare wrench is awesome and works like a charm on brake line fittings.

Cheers...Rob
