A mechanic from the shop I used to work at called me up and told me a dealer had brought in a '91 coupe for a smog. I kind of had my heart set on a hatch, but I figure it's a good opportunity. The dealer called me up and said he'd give it to me for $1000. I offered $850 and he accepted.

I drove down there to check it out, with the money, and he said he can't sell it to me because it didn't pass smog. Now I have to wait until Monday to see what happens next.

It's got 150,000 miles, leaks a little bit of oil, makes a strange noise in the passenger side rear when braking in reverse, and has a few minor dings and paint chips. Nothing I can't handle. Otherwise its got a clean interior, straight body, handles well and runs strong. Pretty good for the price.

I've been waiting for over two years to get a 240, and it is killing me that I'm this close, but I still don't know what is going to happen. I've waited this long, I guess I can wait a few more days.

buy it, the brake chattering in reverse is normal, and the coupe look will grow on you. Trust me ;)

Damn Jacob! $850! You don't get to complain about minor flaws!

Now you don't have an excuse not to come driving! :)

And coupes are great because our trunks don't leak!

Speaking of the loud brake noise when going in reverse, can I ask how this is remedied?

how come it's not passing smog? that's a pretty relevant point, I think... you dont really want something that's burning a quart of oil every 5 mins of idling, do you?

Well, it'll come out to about $1100 after tax and license, but that's still good. I test drove it, but I didn't really get to drive it hard because the dealer rode with me. I hope everything works out with the smog so I can buy it. I'm being cautiously optimistic. Once I get it, we'll go out driving for sure.

Yesterday I took my VW out on that road past Lopez Lake; it was fun, but the whole time I was imagining what it would be like driving a 240. Way less body roll for damn sure :D

What is that stuff you put in your location? Are you still around?

I saw a sil80 (body work at least) parked on Johnson by Orcutt. I guess more and more are going to be popping up around this tiny town, especially with the college kids back.

Yeah, when I first heard it didn't pass smog, I was going to buy it, throw a new cat on, and get it smogged. Even if it isn't the cat, it's old enough that a new one would cover up the problem so I could at least register it. It's only a little higher than passing on HC.

But when I got to the dealer, he told me he couldn't sell it until it passed, so I have to wait until tomorrow (Monday) to talk to him and figure out what to do.

I hung out today with the guy that's going to be doing the smog, so I asked him to drive it around and get it really hot before he runs the test. I used to work for the California smog referee, and you'd be surprised how many times just doing that made a failing car pass.

It's only barely failing smog. I think it's probably something minor. Good chance that the cat and/or O2S is the problem, but I'd have to spend a little time on it to really diagnose what's going on.

It's not burning oil, just a oil leak that I've got to track down, but that's no problem. I'll just keep a close eye on the oil level. Even if it's the rear main, I'll just do the clutch while I'm in there.

You'd be surprised how many cars I've seen burning ridiculous amounts of oil, yet still pass smog.

I think replying to everyones post seperately is how some people got such high post counts, plus pointless posts like this one. I could use some more; I want more than an intake and exhaust.

Yeah I moved to San Carlos, north of San Jose... easier to find work up here, plus free rent. I still have loose ends to tie up back at school. It's a long drive, at least I'll be enjoying the commute :)

The primered black SilEighty? I think its owned by one of the guys at College Auto.

Anyways, the smog stuff 'll be fun... it'll be just like we're in class again! Actually just bring Al and Bruce a case of beer & I'm sure they'll pass you no probs!

Best of luck tomorrow!

San Jose?!?! I've never been there. Big change from here though I'm sure. I'm thinking about moving back to LA.

What kind of job are you looking for?

There are only a few places it can get smogged; it's coming from an enhanced area. Otherwise I wouldn't be worried about it at all. I know a few people ;) . That'll help when I turbo it or do a swap, but I'll have my smog license in about a year and a half anyways.

Yeah, it was the black primered SilEighty. If I got a hatch I was going to leave the front end alone, except MAYBE get the Eastbear headlights. Now that I'm getting (fingers crossed) a coupe, I think I might look into the silvia front end. But body is later. Suspension first, then brakes and wheels, then engine. Unless I get impatient, then the engine will come first :)

Good luck!
