Okay, my mom is looking to get a new vehicle and she wants an SUV. She's getting rid of her 07 TL Type-S and wants something a little more practical and less expensive. She lives in Seattle if that makes a difference.

- It's gotta be an SUV.

- Nothing old

- Has to get fairly decent gas mileage. No Tahoe, Expedition, etc....

- She wants power seats and all the creature comforts

- Has to have "pick up." No Scion XB's. lol

- 10K - 15K

So yeah, any suggestions are welcome! Thanks guys!

QX4 and Pathfinders are nice, we have a QX4 and it's been very reliable. Not the best on fuel mileage but it's reasonable. It's about to break 100k and other than some basic maintenance and a O2 sensor we've had no problems.

The Acura MDX is a nice SUV as well, i'm not a huge Acura fan but I like them.

I'm a fan of '02 and up Ford Explorers too, i've seen a lot of them run forever as long as you take care of them(mainly staying on top of transmission maintenance). My brother has one with 250k miles on it and still going strong. They can be had for cheap and have a lot of room in them along with 3rd row seating.

Kia Sorentos have really impressed me a lot too, Kia has really come up in the world lately.

There's a lot of nice SUVs out there, just do your research and have it checked out before buying it(or look it over closely yourself)

We have a Honda CRV for our around town grocery getter and it's pretty nice. Good on gas, reliable as hell, not the greatest "pick up" in the world but it's great for around town and it's comfortable too.

Honestly, NO SUV nor crossover is going to offer anything remotely resembling even "fairly decent" gas mileage. The car-based ones will do a little better, but you're still going to end up averaging in the high-teens, which I'm sure is considerably poorer than her TL offers.

For that reason, I would say if she's absolutely determined to get an SUV, DON'T make a big deal of fuel economy. Because they all suck, some just suck slightly less. None of them are going to offer anything near as good as a sedan would.

And what size of SUV is she looking for? Something teeny like a CRV or something that seats 7 like a Pilot?

Has she considered something like an Accord Crosstour or a Venza? Those are better choices if she's concerned about fuel economy.

What is so practical about a SUV?

Why not a MiniVan? Typically get good gas mileage and can hold as much as SUVs. They can tow as much as most unibody SUVs too!

Our GMC Jimmy gets between 15-17mpg. Definitely not worth the space you lose as compared to a full-size SUV.

2007 Pacifica is nice. My mom has one. Its really comfy, classy, has a good amount of room, and it looks good. Its FWD, but AWD is available, although its transverse. Its been reliable so far, and we bought it totaled and fixed it up. Bought it at 5k miles and its at about 11k I think at the moment. it gets around 17-20mpg though.

You omitted size, which is a key factor. And with a budget of 10-15K, she's she's looking at used, not new. Since she lives in Seattle, which gets little snow, she probably doesn't need AWD. The bigger she goes, the worse the gas mileage. If she's also concerned about fuel mileage, AWD, even part time, carries a gas mileage penalty

Among the small used ones to check out:RAV4 or CRV

medium:Toyota highlander (FWD, camry based)Toyota 4 runner (indestructible, but part time AWD )PAthy/QX4 (also AWD, but she'd have a stigma of owning the same vehicle as Nala)

crossovers:Murano (altima based0Subaru Forrester (AWD, premium fuel)

Full sized:Acura MDX/Honda PilotToyota Sequoia

Current rogue can get 31MPG in the city...that is better than a lot of cars...

I'm sure the older Rogues do not drop 10-15 MPG, but they do have the dreaded CVT transmission.

What's the financial situation with the TL? Are the payments an issue? Is she upside down in the loan? Is it paid for?

Is hers the 4.0 or 3.5?

Well, I suppose if it's 10-15k the latter two might be tough considering they're relatively new to the market, but I haven't really looked at prices prior to this post. They all drive well, get decent mileage, and have a nice set of features.

Look at the Ford Freestyle/Taurus X, not bad and is very close to being a SUV.

Also the Volvo XC70.

I know...

1: it's his mom

2: Needs have not been defined.

3: Not many people need an SUV

4: A minivan holds as much as an SUV

5: A minivan gets better mileage.

6: This thread fails for perpetuating the negative stigma towards MiniVans

1: Nothing he says will matter. It's like Nala asking questions...

3: Most SUV owners don't engage 4 wheel drive. They live their life in FWD or RWD.

5;6: I have boxed what people look at in green, and what they should look at in red.

1. And he said she wants an SUV. 2. Only the size has not been defined. 3. irrelevant4. irrelevant5. irrelevant6. not true. He simply said she wants an SUV, not a minivan. Her choice. That's not disparaging. But YOU are perpetuating the myth that you and Nala are related... 7. You still fail. see below
