I need some help here. For the past couple of weeks my 96 maxima just dies. I can be setting still and all the sudden it dies. Then I have to crank it for awhile and pump the accelerator and then it starts and runs fine. It seems to happen only once a day or a couple days. Wierd.....

Does the check engine light come on?

The check engine light stays on. When I replaced the engine about a year ago it has always been on. I have had it reset before, but it stays off for just a little bit then comes back on. The nissan dealership said that everything was okay that any little rattle can trigger the sensor. So I haven't worried about it. I quess that I need to just go in and have them do the 100.00 test. What do you think. Thanks for your response.

Reffer to the how to sticky in the maxima forum. There is a step by step proceedure to pull codes and a list of OBDII codes.

I am so appriecative for your replys, but I am new to this site and I must be a dumb ***. But I can not find the forum that you are talking about. I will keep looking. I did find out that I think that I need to replace my knock sensor if I can find it. That was the orignal reason why my light stayed on after I replaced the engine. But I need to find the codes you are talking about.

Car is running at good rpm's and is not overheating.... does this help any?

The map/ baro and knock sensor codes will not have any real effect on the cars idleing. However the coolant code could be a problem. Check your connector on the coolant temp. You may also have a problem with the engine harness where it goes to the firewall on the RH strut tower. Try wiggeling that harness in that area while the car is running and see if it dies. If so you could have a couple brokem wires in that loom.

I replaced the temp. sensor unit. It was beside the temp gauge sensor. I just drove it around the block and then parked it. I checked my codes again and I am getting the same codes.13-2,1-3,3-4,9-8. It was the same as before. Why, if I replaced the coolant temp sensor with a new one would it still be in the codes. Is there something else I should check?

Well first I didnt tell you to replace it. I said check its connection. Did you also conduct the harness check by the strut tower I mentioned?

Yeah I know that you didn't tell me to replace it. I thought that I would just do it. I haven't checked the harness yet. I just thought it was crazy that I replaced the cooling sensor and I am still getting the the same codes. I will get back with you as soon as I check the harness, Thanks for everything.

Knock sensor could be retarding the timing too far? Or IAC Valve? Just thoughts...

After you replace a sensor, you need to also reset the codes. That is probably why you are seeing the same codes as before. Simply replacing the sensor will not clear the code.

It can also be done by turning the ECU reset screw, or the old-school method of disconnecting the battery for awhile.

I just got the 0103 engine coolant sensor code also. I cannot find information about where that is or how it was to replace it. I'm not sure where the sensor is. How did you do it? I think you already did this, but to clear the codes, just turn the screw clockwise to the stop, couterclockwise to the stop, then clockwise and counterclockwise again. It may be awhile before the codes come back.

If your standing at the driver side quarter panel looking in at the engine, under the air tube you can see 2 sensors on the block. One has a single wire and the other has 2 wires. The sensor that you are looking for is the coolant sensor and it will be the second one with 2 wires going to it. You need to let the engine cool down first before you remove it. I learned the hard way, because antifreeze will come out. Just be fast and make the switch. I bought mine at carquest. But O'Riellys is cheaper. About 19.00.The part # is 71-2572. That is a carquest #. Hope this helps.

Thanks! Sounds like a quick and easy fix (for once!). Sometimes these simple tasks are the hardest ones to figure out, since you can't find as many write-ups about them.

exactly what did you do that stopped the stalling out. i have a 95 nissan maxima that keeps stalling out and its the most irritating thing. i noticed after saying that its been two days and no stalling you did not specify what you had done for it to stop stalling out on you. Please responde! its important because i have a new born child that i dont need to be stuck out some where because the car stalled and wont start. thanks, larry.

Like I said in my last posting, I changed out the temp sensor. There is to sensors side by side. One is for the gauge and the other is the temp.If you need anything else just ask. My max is acting ok for the moment. Hasn't died since I replaced it.
