OK so for the last two weeks I've had the "service Engine soon" light coming on and off. This just after the big 80K mile check up at the dealer and the transmission flush. I took the Murano in yesterday to have this checked out. I've got an 03 with 87K on it. The engine light comes from two failed catalytic convrters. That means that they have to replace them and the entire exhaust system from the cats back. The cats shed chunks when they fail that clog the system, thus the light (diminished exhaust passage). That ladies and gentlemen will set me back just shy of 2 grand. Now for the rest of the story. It also seems I've got a failed engine mount and a cracked and failing engine mount. Replacing these will run another $700 - 800 dollars. So, with tax, I'm gonna be out $3,000.

This car has never been roughed up. All of the miles are freeway miles and I do all of the required maintence when it's required or sooner. In all my 35 plus years of driving, I've never has a cat fail...never and some of my cars have gone way beyond 170,000 miles. I've never had an engine mout fail either and that includes a couple of heavily used and abused 4X4s.

This is my most likely my last Murano, what a poor excuse for a car. Adding insult to injury, another Murano, a 2004, was in the shop that day for exactly the same thing, failed cats. I just can't that cats would fail on a modern car.
