maybe i can help a little, i believe what you are haveing is " intake backfire" i took an engine performance class a while back and i remember the teacher saying that it can be caused by " valve overlap" it could be a timing issue, or perhaps cam alignment. when you said the car was not all the way put togehter, did you yourself install the cams, timing chain componetns? maybe you should recheck them if that is the case. i know there is a writeup on here somewhere with basically everything you need to know from JIMWOLF TECHNOLOGY. to change your timing chain yes you have to take off the 2 parts of the front cover and valve cover, but its not hard, there is also the fsm floating around here somewhare, that would help a lot. is your timing correct? do you have access to a timing light? its pretty simple to check depending on your car, i have a 95/ka24de and basically unplug the TPS after you warm up the engine, hook up the light and makesure its , if i remember correctly 20BTDC +/- 2. well best of luck and i hope this helped in some way.
