I just bought my 240sx s13 from this guy and he said it was just sitting there for a long time, when i got it the battery was dead and there were some leaks, i got all that fixed and a new battery, also the transmission slips and there is a minor cylinder rattle but he told me that when i bought it, he said it was the master cylinder. but when i gave my s13 a test drive, it began to smoke alot and it smelt like something was burnt. anybody know whats wrong?

i havent checked the head gasket, the smoke was a blueish, the thermostat isnt working so it the water just goes right back where it came from, and the oil, it was kinda peanutbuttery i guess and it smelt kinda burned aswell.

well when you check the headgasket checkk the head for worpage b/c its an aluminum head and in a lot of cases when the head gasket blows its b/c the head is worped i mean its not exactly cheap to get it machined but if its worped it will be better than replacing the headgasket every 2 months and you should definatley get the therm. working oem lets out at 195 and i just did mine yesterday and got a 170 for $12

but i hope every thing works out man

P.S. how much did you pay for it??

probably a bad piston ring or maybe several, . sounds like your burning the oil. and you have water getting in the oil as well.

I'm sorry... Did I read that right? You said your master cylinder was rattling? I don't know about all that, but you should definately check your muffler bearings...

I'm guessing that if your engine has: "peanut butter" oil, a smoking problem, and a death rattle... it is safe to assume that your engine is no good. You most likely have a blown head gasket, and bad valves, along with shot rings/ main bearings... but that rattle could be your master cylinder I guess...

Did you buy this thing from a boy racer or what? I assume th valve cover was already painted "race me red"? Not a good sign. Alot of 240's get raped over and over again thoughout their life. There is nothin wrong with a cheap, beat 240, but get ready to spend some cash... I got mine for $250, but I've got well over 6 grand into it now, and 2 years of my life.. as well as lots of dirty looks from my wife...lol

well i wasnt sure about the oil being peanut butter like, ive never heard that describing oil nor have i seen it. so i wouldnt know, and the guy who had it didnt seem like a racer, as for the engine top being red, they came like that for the early s13 models i think. lol and yeah im gonna spend alot on my 240 since i want to put an rb25 or rb26 in it if the KA dies on me lol

If you wanna spend money... they make an LS3 conversion for not too much more then the Skyline settup, and you would decimate all that lined up against you. Go big or go home, eh?

First, I'd like to say I like your initiative. Never thought of making a you tube vid to get diagnostic help. Unfortunately...that is the same sound my car made when it had a bad main bearing and a bad wrist pin. I don't know for sure which one was making the noise (I just did a whole bottom end rebuild), but both are catastrophic engine failure waiting to happen.

Second, I would stick with the KA. It is just my own opinion, but that is how I feel. I looked into the 26, and decided that it was more work than it was worth. Alot of money involved. I priced out everything I wanted and was in the 7K neighborhoood. You can turbo, supercharge, or even bore and stroke (up to 2.6l!) a KA and get a reliable 350 rwp. That is plenty for a 240, unless you are seriously racing like every other day. That can be accomplished for less than 4K.

Anyway, that is just my two cents.

The KA is a greatly under-rated motor... I have a moderately built setup and it is a blast. It doesn't make massive horsepower, but it makes enough to melt the rear tires at will. The 240 is a pretty light car and very well balanced: if you build the chassis right, you don't need a ton of power to make it do what you want, when you want.

My friend, it sounds like you have some serious work to do. That probably means you're running a rich mixture of air and fuel, all that on top of your previous descriptions sounds like some pretty major work. You might as well wait for someone to put up their old engine on craigslist and snatch that. It would probably be easier and cheaper than fixing the problems on the current engine.
