I work at a tanning salon, which really sucks, but it was paying (I bought a car with what I earned there). Anyways, on Wednesday, I started closing an hour before like always at 8:00 (sweeping, cleaning, trash, count money, etc) but at 8:45, 4 people came in to tan (most going for 20 minutes)...

If people are in the beds at 9:00, I can't lock the doors or count the money, then i still have to clean their beds and empty the trash out of their rooms, so naturally, it's going to take a little bit longer to get out of there than it usually does. (When it's slow, I'm usually out about 9:05)

On Wednesday, I clocked out at 9:17...went in on Thursday...someone had changed it to 9:04... this is the second time this **** has happened too! And I said something last time...I didn't stay an extra 13 minutes for my health, I WAS WORKING! Don't I deserve to get paid for it? I'm not volunteering my services, and I'm not even asking for overtime!

It's just the principal of it. They think they can chop hours off my paycheck, here and there, and rip me off for what could end up being an hours worth of pay every two weeks or something!

Just had to get this off my chest, cuz it's pretty upsetting...and if it does happen once more, it ain't gonna be pretty...

Yeah I left a note, and I'm sure they have read it by now...but it's too late to get the money for it, the paychecks come in this morning...I mean, less than 75 cents ins't gonna make it break me, but like I said, it's the whole principal of it...

Brit, I'd be contacting the local labor board or an employment attorney - They LOVE stuff like this.

Yeah, what AZ said is right. As soon as you bring legalities into this they get scared. That is downright wrong, i worked at a restaurant whose manager liked to do that crap, (he also embezzled a lot of money and was subsequently fired)

Anyhow

I say go in with

this happens to me when I'm over hours for the week. I just tack on what I wasn't able to include on the next week's timecard.

Heh. When I was teaching Tae Kwon Do, I was working 4 hours a day 4 days a week. However since each class was only 45 minutes, he took off 15 minutes for every hour I was there. I was there from 4-9 sometimes but most of the time, 4-8.

One month I worked 50 hours and I got a whopping $150. This lasted for about 2 years because I was young and intimidated by adults. So I was scammed out of close to $4000. Now he's run off to korea for tax evasion and now I can't get my monies back from him.

I have thought about contacting a labor board, but what if they fire me because of all the problems? And even if they don't, they will definitely be malicious to me...

If you contact the labor board about this, there is NO WAY they would fire you. If they did, it's wrongfull termination and you can sue their asses. I suggest you just threaten to get the labor board involved, that usually does the trick.

Is there a poster of the laws/regulations of the workplace at your job. Should be. It's law to hang it up in the backroom or whereever employees may see it. There should be a phone number for you to call on there.

I'd first confront your manager/boss and talk to them. Maybe it was a mistake. However, if they give you some crap excuse, then go the labor board.

when i worked at a grocery store, you had to work for 7 minutes after your scheduled time to get overtime pay, if the salon has anything like that, i bet thats what they are doing

also, it is illegal for them to fire you for filing a complaint against them.

This is true, but companies can always find other reasons to fire a person..
