you wont decrease gas mileage, if anything there will probably be a slight increase because the engine isnt choking anymore with that restrictive closed box.

but then again it might decrease because you will want to feel the pull more lol

I was actually able to get a jigsaw in there the other day! I got two of the three cylinder cut at the ends. I couldn't get to the third with the jigsaw, but there are still a bunch of holes I drilled into it. I tell a noticeable difference now!

lol we probably dont need a k&n cold air intake, we have it built in, you just need to "cut it up" lol, but i wouldnt be surprised if this gave us HP gains.

Yeah, I wouldn't advise doing this mod with an aftermarket cold air kit. The hole where this resonator enters the engine bay is the only source of cold air for the intake. If you leave the resonator in, the cold air kit will just pull in the hot engine air. You should def. remove the resonator if installing an aftermarket kit.

yeah you should either do what i did or just throw out that whole box, i bet they dont tell you that in the k&n instructions, but if they claim and say its proven like 14.8 hp gains for us , then if you cut holes or rip that box out, you got like 17 or 18 hahaa

Well, spent about an hour taking my car apart, and the 2000 QX4 does not have this set up, it looks more like a snorkel running into the top of the fender, no diffuser tubes at all, I'm bummed, thought I could get some more pep out of the 3.3

I assume this will be the case for the older Q's & Pathys as well...

Anyways I switched to Mobile 1 and I took out the whole canister. I drove to Charlotte Nc and back this week. 70mph I ended my trip with 19.7mpg

Old thread, just read it, never even noticed this. Have had a Jim Wolf Pop Charger for awhile and recently put a Spectre intake together. This should add a little more airflow I am assuming. Will have to check this out! Thanks

What's the procedure for removing the resonator for a 3.5L? Or would it be easier and just as good to simply cut holes?

Just saw this also. I installed my pop charger on my VQ about two weeks ago and I love it. Im going to look tomorrow at taking out that white plastic completely and routing the flexible pipe up to the hole, then making a plate to cover where the hole in the engine bay is for when I go wheeling to avoid gettin water in the engine bay and risk hydrolocking the motor cause of splashing.

Its the Intake resonator, basically its there to quiet down the intake noise by basically slowing down the flow of air. It also functions as a water trap of sorts if any water were to shoot up the intake it has one last chance to fall down before being ingested. I did it to mine and liked it for awhile, but then went with something different in the end. Here is a thread to what I did, take out the resonator completely....only do this if you are not running the stock air box.

01silvapathy thanks for the info... I just want to know that cutting the bottoms off the white tubes is safe to do... I have a 1/2 inch wood hole drill bit that I am going to use which should have no problem cutting the plastic I just don't want screw my Pathy up!

I don't think I could do what you did mechanically inclined is not one of my best attributes but I can drill holes...

Thanks

Just finished this mod earlier today.
I'm not the very keen to changes, but I guess there's a "quicker" response when downshifting to speed up.

What I hate the most is when I approach a stop light, I start to slow down (mabye from 45mph down to 20mph) and then just before I slow way way down to a near stop, the light turns green, and I try to continue... there's that short delay before the transmission kicks in; this is prior to the resonator cut.

I did this a few times today after cutting those bottoms out, and I guess there's no longer a delay.

However, I'm one of those anaI folks: I'd like for someone to propose a reasonable explanation of what has changed to allow the transmission to engage or predict a little better when downshifting?

Here's my pic contribution:

the left-most "duct" is cut at an angle because I couldn't position my hacksaw to cut in a parallel line

I didn't completely remove because of 2 main reasons:
1. I figured at least having air routed from somewhere else other than the engine bay would be a little better. True or false, whatever, it's all in the mind.
2. I'm hoping the routing, however slight, will prevent too much debris getting into the main airbox. And yes, I know that's what the filter is for, but anything to minimize it - I'm for it
=P

but honestly, I did consider just throwing it to the side, but since it wasn't difficult replacing it, I just threw it back in there.

No harm done, right? It's not gonna kill me :)

So i was attempting to do this mod but sadly all the bolts that held it to the car were rusted to hell and i managed to break the heads off all the bolts, any suggestions for fixing this issue?

are you able to remove the "canister/box"? If so, just ditch the thing :)

Thats the air intake temp sensor.

Myself, and some other members have just zap-strapped (zip-tied) it to the closest thing available - I think I attatched it to a mounting hole for the resonator.

I did this well over a year ago with no real problems. The truck does sound more noisey on that side though. But throttle responce seemed better.

And Did removing IAT sensor effect your fuel economy, I have read on various Forums that it will certainly decrease the Fuel economy instead of increasing since the mixture going into the cyclinders will not be the most accurate one, because it lacks the part of work done by IAT Sensor
