Will the engine start and run after the starter has been jumpered? Or just turn over and try to start? How new is the battery? What happens with a battery jump from another vehicle?
My next step would be to examine both battery clamps. Is there any corrosion on the battery terminals (clean with baking soda/water)? Are the battery clamps still in good shape? Are you having trouble getting either clamp tight? Bad contact or a clamp that's not quite tight at the battery can cause your problems.
Hold off on buying a new distributor (aka CAS- crank angle sensor) for now.
