for the past 2 winters here in Boston, my 98 i30 starts fine, but stalls as soon as i put it in gear, No trouble if temp is over 34-36.My workaround is to let it warm up until the blower comes on, then drive off. with no further stalling all day.

dealers can only guess and suggest a $750 Nmile service pack.

its a 98 with now 110K miles, Anyone have an idea

Dave,

I went over to Maxima.org and browsed around in their forums for a while. This sounds like a fairly common problem that is usually resolved with a good intake/ throttle body cleaning. Have you cleaned your intake lately?

Your car has an AAC valve (sometimes also called IAC "Idle Air Control) that's mounted somewhere on the plenum. It controls air going into the intake to adjust idle speed for various conditions - e.g. A/C compressor turns on, P/S pump load, and especially during starting. If this valve (or the throttle body, or any other intake system part) is clogged or has substantial carbon build-up strange things begin to happen. I'd recommend a complete intake system cleaning. This will involve removing the plenum, throttle body, EGR valve, AAC valve, etc and cleaning them with bottle brushes, trained mice, etc. with throttle body cleaner.

If that doesn't work, the Maxima guys sometimes point to problems with the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor - it's the box located just north of your air filter box with the electrical connetion.

Good luck!

Heath

thanx, I recall someone mentioning that but it didn't stick to me. the last guys to touch my car didn't think they could do that whole thing. The good/bad of these cars is not needing much maintanence and non dealer service shops have no confidence doing minor repairs.

did not know about the maxima.org site
