my g20 doesnt have 5th gear

i just bought a 1994 infiniti g20 and when i put it in 5th gear and push on the gas it grinds really bad..i was thinking it is the linkage but im also pushing towards a transmission...any ideas?? thanks

most early se-r (2.0L sr20de) and g20's are known for that or something similar. usually they're known for a fifth gear pop-out. if its grinding, you might need a synchro possibly.

Easier and cheaper to replace the transmission than to try to fix the problem.

Might need a new syncro or your shifter is really wore out. If your using a short shifter try pushing it all the way to the right and gently bring it to 5th. Check your clutch pedal cable too it's probally loose.

The 5th gear synchro is the problem child here, again a new transmission at a junkyard will be $100 or less. Usually with some sort of gurantee that it works, then just swap the trannies. This will save much time and many headaches in the future.

I know most people say to just get a used transmission from a junk yard, but my question is what years transmission's are good to get? My G20 is a 91. Will a 95-99 transmission bolt right in with no modifications? Will the B15 00-01 transmission bolt right up with no mods?
