I parked in a parking space today and there was one of those cement parking-spot bump stops (don't know what they are actually called). I guess this one was higher than normal and the underside of the bumper scraped along the top of it. Well, I backed up to avoid having my car resting on the thing, and the left side of my front bumper came completely unattached! A Nissan certified body shop in the area quoted me $731 (front bumper and fender replacement). Has this happened to anyone else? I am pretty livid.

I actually watched it happen to a PT Cruiser exactly 8 minutes ago... and I showed them how to salvage their bumper...

tough luck if yours can't be reattached... eep!

I actually hit a piece of metal on the freeway one morning and the passenger side of my bumper came disconnected from the fender. I just limped it to work and bolted it back together (I'm a tech at a benz dealership). Good as new except for some minor cosmetic damage. I can't see that a parking block can cause enough damage to need replacement of both the fender and bumper. Sounds to me like that body shop is trying to pad the bill to get more money. See if you can take some pictures so that we can assess the damage.
