Here is the first of hopefully a number of tech documentary type videos for the gold ol' CA motor.. Removing the camshfts correctly..

Its probably one of the simplest things to do, but most people just get in there and rip them out without understanding that they can cause damage and they can eventually fail prematurely later on down the track..

Here is another one for you all, this is about upgrading the ignition system.. I will add to this one as I physically install it in the car..

Enjoy...

Very nice production. For someone that has never done this, and is unsure of the steps in the factory service manual, it will be a real benefit. I, unfortunately, did not watch both all of the way through as I have done this process enough I can do it in my sleep and I frankly got bored and started clicking associated links on the side. But I am sure you wrapped the job up nicely.

Can you explain in detail how you reinstalled the front camshaft seals? Or did you have a machinist do it for you? I am having trouble with mine. thanks

Heres the procedure from the FSM. I've tried this method but it does not work for me. I'm probably doing something wrong otherwise i wouldnt be on here asking. Sorry im just really frustrated that im being held up by a damn seal.

just snug that front cap up, dont torque it down and install the seal square. If you are having trouble inserting evenly, you can use the old seal or a big socket as a even loading tool so to speak.

I tried using a big socket but wrecked 2 seals doing that. It kept distorting the o-spring inside the seal lip. The spring is very fragile and the seal itself is very stiff and non-flexing towards the outer edges when trying to squeeze it over the outside diameter of the camshaft. The inside lip is flexible but very difficult to strech over the shaft without damaging it.

I have an idea, what if i heat the seal until it becomes more pliable then try and tap it in using the socket method or just a mallet.

you really shouldnt need to heat the seal to make it pliable for install.

i left the front cam cap a bit loose and installed the seals by hand with motor oil.

I think ive been buying the wrong part. It seemed too small for the camshaft diameter.

Are you greasing the crap out of the inside of the seal?

yeah I have! It is the wrong seal. It's too small compared to the old one I took out.
