So i dont know if it was coincidence but i had to park on a hill and when I went to take my car out of park it would not shift. I used the shift lock release to move. After I thought about it I decided to check my brake lights and they didnt come on when pressed. I checked all the fuses visually, they all look good but i need a test light. Im sure its the relay that blew but wont know till i get it in the shop.

I had the same issue but I was able to rock the car back and forth to get it out of gear. I changed a habit of my driving that makes a big difference. Try this when parking: come to a complete stop, with your foot on the brake put the trans in neutral, set the parking brake, ease up on the brake pedal so that the parking brake is holding the car (don't take your foot off the brake pedal in case the p-brake doesn't hold!), then put the car in park. This doesn't place strain on the trans to hold the car and makes shifts out of park easier.

I though that was safe practice for anyone driving an Automatic? Actually the Automatic transmission should be treated the same as the Manual. When an automatic car comes to a stop, you obviously hold the brake pedal down, shift to neutral, apply handbrake, shift to park and release brake. Thats a common practice amongst smart automatic drivers!! And yes, there is such a thing.

well it was my brake switch stuck in the closed position. The system never saw that i pressed the brake and so it didnt engage and release the shifter.

I started using that "safe practice" on my Neon all the time when it got in a big bind trying to get out of park on a hill. I did with the Versa from the first day I got it.
