Guys, I am going to be attempting on my first Oil change ever this weekend, since I will be 500-700 miles overdue. I was looking at 4 dealership's websites (2 in Orlando Florida, 1 in Coral Springs Florida, and 1 in Miami Florida) and none of them had a coupon for oil changes and tire rotations for the price I expect. There is a Nissan dealership conveniently located 2 miles far from campus, and I called them today to get a quote, and their price is going towards an oil change and tire rotation price of Acura ($60+) which is too expensive IMO for me to pay for an oil change and tire rotation for a Nissan. Other dealers were trying to charge me around $50 which is still too high for me.

What I understand is that they are charging me between $20 to $30 just for tire rotation, and anywhere between $25 to $30 for oil change. However, I can theoretically get my oil in a 5qt jug for $18 at WalMart (we are talking about the Valvoline brand) and OE NISSAN USA oil filter for a few additional dollars.

Since this is my first time ever to jack up the Rogue, where are the jack points at the front and at the rear, so I can have an even level when I put my Rogue onto the jack stands?

This helped me.

https://youtu.be/j2h82eBvX0Q

I usually never rotate my tires but I did do it some 10,000 -20,000 miles ago by using this technique.

https://youtu.be/wIkjxFjlxy4

Honestly, I never rotate and if I did, it's once in a blue moon if ever.

More like never.

Personally never had a problem.

The good thing is you know what your doing and can torque the lug nuts to spec if you do rotate yourself.

Welcome to diy! Changing the oil yourself means you get to put the correct oil in. Often dealers will buy a big drum of their most commonly used oil and use it on most all their vehicles. Quick lube places are notorious for that. I would never take any vehicle to a quick lube place of any kind. However I do recognize that many people can not physically , don’t know how, have no place to accomplish the task, have no tools or are just plain lazy so places like quick lubes flourish.

Get a good quality oil I love valvoline and a good filter. I prefer wix, but Napa is good, the last I knew wix made the filters for carquest, avoid fram and other filters that have no recognizable name.

You can change the oil on a rogue without jacking the vehicle up. I have not however figured out how to rotate the tires using that method, if you figure it out please let everyone know.

I bought my first car nearly new with 5k miles on it when I was 19 living in California. When it came time to drive home across country I mentioned to a buddy that I needed to get it tuned up. He said I’ll help you , he gave me a list of stuff to buy and showed me what to do. Oil, filter, air filter, plugs, rotor, pcv, etc. I drove the 2500 or so miles by myself no problems. I still love to drive and I do all my own maintenance.

Used Fram while growing up and never had problems.

This was b4 the internet and its reputation as the orange can of death.

Anyways, you can’t go wrong with the Fram Ultra filter.

Much higher quality and built better then years past. :bigthumb:

I have been researching for a good oil filter, and I found a Bosch oil filter from Autozone, but I am not sure if that fits the Rogue. Also, the dealer in Orlando that I go to uses Valvoline, so I want to stick with that brand of oil.

And I am a big guy, so I am not sure if the 7in ground clearance is enough, but I will give it a try.

Greg, I actually looked up on the YouTubes for jack points and found nothing on it other than info for the 1st gens and how to do oil changes on the 2nd gens. I will have to go through the FSMs as you stated these next few days.

I just found an oil filter that has roughly 5 stars overall for reviews on AAP

https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/pur ... il+filters

Apparently, AAP claims that it fits the 2nd gen Rogue. I am unsure of this brand and if it even really fits the Rogue. Also, I couldn't find the jack points in the FSM, but I found another Nissan Rogue site that has a diagram of where the jack points are located.

I just got confirmed prices from the 4 dealers and no one is in my budget. What the heck happened with the prices these days? IMO Anything above $50 for conventional oil change and tire rotation is too expensive.

Also, any opinions on the Bosch 3300 oil filter? Autozone has it for $8.99 and Rockauto has it for $3.57.

I think I’ve used a Bosch once on my daughters old Toyota when I couldn’t find anything else. Bosch makes good quality starters, alternators and the like. I really can’t speak to their oil filters.

I use to love using the Bosch distance plus, but I used the equivalent longer version 3323.

Back in the day, I use to find them at advance auto, pep boys, and especially Wal-Mart who had a good deal.

But now it's as hard as trying to find penzoil platinum ultra motor oil these days.

Use to be my favorite oil filter. But rarely at any brick & motor store.

I've got a 2015, so should be same as your 2016. For the front jack points, I use the blue colored bolt. There's one on each side. That's the only reason I remember it, is because it was different colored from some of the other visable bolts.
For the rear, I can't remember off-hand. As long as it's not a suspension part and is part of the frame, you're good.
For oil filter I use Mobil 1 M1-108 as I got a great case price shortly after we bought it 4 years ago, Oct 2014. Wix does make a good filter as well. I use them on almost everything else I drive and will be using them on the Rogue once my Mobil1 filters run out.

BTW, RockAuto was giving me a delivery date of Wednesday, Feburary 13th, which means I will be on campus where everyone is forbidden to work on their vehicles on campus grounds (university policy). And my goal is to do this thing on this coming Sunday morning at my driveway.

Does the Mobil 1 M1-108 oil filter fits correctly for the 2nd gens? Cause the one WalMart is selling is M1-108A, so not sure if that is the same thing as the one you bought.

Just got price quote from Nissan for OE Oil Filter, wich is $9.10 (including tax). Should I get this one instead of the aftermarket brands?

From what I can tell, it's basically the same filter. Definitely for the external dimensions it will be identical. Just the filter material 'might' be different.
It seems like a lot of companies are now selling an "Extended life" filter like this. I think they are intended for lower mileage usage where you only need to change oil once per year. As to whether or not it actually filters better than the "regular" filter, who knows.
I got my M1108's for just under $8 each when I bought 12.

Using a decent oil and filter, then changing it regularly is more important that what brand. In my opinion anyway.
Valvoline, QuakerState, Pennzoil, MobilOne, Purolator, Wix, Fram, OEM...They all will serve you well as long as the change intervals are not abused.

Now that I'm a very very old fart.

I'm starting to believe I don't really need to stress about filters and oils.

Trust me I still like reading best of the best and reviews here and there.

But in the decades of driving cars, I never really had an oil related failure.

Back in the day when they promoted 3,000 mile oil changes were the norm.

As long as you change oil & filter every 3000 miles or 25,000 miles.

Your good.

Because if anything, your transmission will s*#t the fan first.

Which happened with my last nissan.

Even when I was careful with my oil changes, my nissan became an unrideable piece of junk that the dealership couldn't fix.

Yeah, great oil and filters, but the transmission will bite your A $$ in the end.

No matter what.

In my opinion. :werd:

I have been using the Bosch Distance Plus filter for years now and like it better than any others. D3300 for my Rogue

You can go to any manufacturer website and put in your car and it will tell you what filters will fit.

I used the Mobil 1 filter for a little while and didn't like it because it's very small. There was a youtube video where some dude took apart a bunch of filters and the Bosch Distance plus and the greatest filter surface area and the Mobil 1 had the least.

As for Oil I have always used Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum synthetic.

Watch ImSticken06's oil change video and you will be all good.

The weather was like 78 degrees, felt really nice.

So I changed my filter even though I was not planning too since it only went a little over 10,000 miles.

It's was a Fram Ultra, longer version. And the replacement as well.

Was planning to keep it between 15,000-20,000 miles, but got bored so what the heck, I replaced it begrudgingly.

And I topped off with some Amsoil SS 5W-20 I had lying around. Been doing it during this OCI because I am not ready to use my box of a dozen Amsoil SS 5w-30 until I complete this long OCI.

Oh and another thing, this oil change consisted of 0W-30 Amsoil SS for the first time just to give it a try.

Runs great, that it's so hard to tell if my motor is running due to hardly any vibration coming from the steering wheel.

I bought all the tools and everything needed and attempted to change the oil yesterday. But, I was hit with a huge roadblock... The $99.99 3-ton jack that I bought from Harbor Freight failed to go up, after multiple attempts and tries. Also, I was doing this 1 hour before I went to work.

I also gave it a try this morning and same result happened. So, as usual, when everything else failed, I had to go to Nissan. However, today Nissan got me to switch into 0W-20 oil, that synthetic oil stuff made by Mobil 1, not the usual 5W-30 from Valvoline. Basically they gave me the synthetic for $20 + tire rotation for another $20, which was a great deal, considering how much they were initially charging me. They also showed me that my front brake pads were at 3mm (I am probably one of the few customers that goes into the area to see if the part they saying is true or incorrect), and fixed it for $199 (all in).

Today's total then came out to $235.54 (including tax and a 20% discount because I wanted a great price, and not gonna let the dealer stiff me out). Probably gonna be continuing with 0W-20 if the price is equivalent or lower than the 5W-30 oil.

For what it's worth, I have been changing my own oil for many years. We recently sold our 2008 Rogue slawd to my brother at about 110,000 miles. After our original oil changed included with the purchase of the car, I have used M1 extended performance & motorcraft (Ford) filters. Changes at either the 15,000 or 12 Months. Brother is a real particular person & made the effort to check the looks of the cylinder head as enclosed by the valve cover. He reports that the surfaces inside look as though someone had just polished them. I agree with the previous poster that changing the oil on schedule is probably more important than the oil itself. (as long as it is the proper rating. No SA rated oil from the quickie mart.

I only drive about 7500-8000 miles a year on my 2013 Rogue, and I use full synthetic Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended Protection (the one rated to 15,000 miles). I typically do an oil change and tire rotation approximately every 10 months in 5500-6500 mile intervals.

I don't think it matters much which brand filter you use, but I like the higher quality filters from any manufacturer's product line. For example, if using Purolator, I would use their BOSS filter, PBL14612, rather than regular Purolator ONE PL14612. I've used Wix 51358, Napa Gold 1358, Mobil M1-108A, and K&N HP-1008 all without any problems. All these filters have an anti-drainback valve, which is important. Remember this is for a first generation Rogue. Second generation should require similar (or maybe exact same) part numbers, but double check before you buy and install.

If using conventional oil and cheaper filters, I think that's fine, but only if you change the oil every 3500-4000 miles, regardless of the 7500 mile interval called for in the manual. For longer intervals, I wouldn't recommend the cheaper filters or conventional oil.

I go 5000-6000 miles on conventional and 6000-8000 miles for synthetic (literally depends on my OCD). Since my 2016 Rogue is over 100k miles, I have no plans on having anyone work on it. And I am probably thinking about trying that mobil 1 all year thing since I drive roughly 30k miles a year (this literally cuts my oil changes by 5 times) and then use synthetic for 10k miles. My plan with this is to do an oil analysis of both and see if this is a great choice or not. But at every 7500 miles, I will rotate my tires.
