what's up peoples, I just enjoyed my first drift session! A couple of buddies of mine went to a big parking lot, and first we set up some cones because he is wanting to try out autox but wants to practice first (rsx type-s) and so we went around a bit. then I started learning a bit of crap about the way my car handled, and started pulling the ebrake in some of the tight stuff.

then we went to the big side, and went for some full blown clutch kicking action! it was the ****! and I have an open diff, and it kicked out just like it should have! of course, I' m no option 2 demo guy yet, but it was fun as hell, and I didn't do that bad, pulled off a couple of nice ones and came out ok, but I definitely see the need for stickier front tires! well, we got kicked out of the parking lot, but no tickets and the cop was cool about it. but damn, where to go now?

search for industrial areas.

They are abondoned past 7pm, but don't run until atleast 12. Don't stay for longer than an hour. An hour is probably too long. Considering the roads there are probably city roads, the stuff you'll be doing could be constreud as "drag racing" and pull you a quick 8 points if a cop is an *******. Those are the downsides. upsides: 5 lane roads, empty, 5 lane intersections. DORIFTO.

haha. or, practice your grip driving, learn how to approach the intersection at 120 and heel toe a good exit. I wouldn't recommend starting with that speed, seeing as it's probably more dangerous than trying to drift, because unless you are supremely stupid you wouldn't try to drift over 65 until you got a feel for it, and at that speed you have room to mess up.

Know the area VERY well before you go for any type of extended run, know every exit out, because if you see a pair of unusually bright rectangles creeping closer, you must always assume it's a cop, make a good speed exit at about 40 or so down the road, toward a major road, once you can't see the headlights, pretend you are playing hide and go seek with those rectangles, you don't like to lose. Get atleast 2 miles away. These are some basic rules to follow. Most cops will not be sympathetic to your desire to just have fun.

Or you can call around to the tracks in your area and see if they hold any drifting events, or if they'll alteast open their skidpad to you. There's and organization here called AARRF that for like a hundred bucks will take you out on a course and teach you all kinds of performance driving techniques. it's only in the midwest but maybe you got something similar in your area. or you can even get a group of friends and rent a lot so you won't have to worry about getting kicked out. if none of that isn't possible, try to keep it off the public roads as much as possible. otherwise go to a big lot late at night tucked away in some industrial section for a short period of time. But I don't know why I'm advising you on all this cuz my car is in too rough shape to drift, and I've never even done it. good luck have fun

i'd try not to develop any patterns of when you appear there either. don't go there at the same time/day--all the time. you might get followed. also, don't let people know where you go so you don't get a convoy of spectators following ya in and out. if anything, it's best to go out and pratice on your own, than two or more cars.. cause then it could just be construed as drag racing as toki said.

me and a friend race around some empty parking lots sometimes. problem is there's not really enough room to get a good sideways drift. and there are still cars in the lot sometimes, but we try to stay away from parked cars.but then we found this stadium under construction nearby... big, empty (mostely), flat, and dirt. man o man, good drifting times there. I pulled a 180 around a tree sideways the whole time. man I wish I had a vlsd...empty back roads that no one knows about are fun. but yeah, any light you see, it could be a cop. so as soon as you see a light, proceed to follow normal traffic rules. like speed limit.

yeah, I'm gonna check on that organization, and see if anyone in the area is interested in renting a parking lot or going to the track once a month. but I read on another thread that it's good to be an experienced grip driver as well, so I'm doing as much autox as possible, and even doing a drivers edge roadracing event in september. just need a place to practice the fun stuff, hehe. those are all good ideas, too!

I've found a couple locations that work well for me.

My old High School parking lot was good

But my favorite by far was A parking lot directly behind the female dormitorys :rockon

we'd be out there getting sideways, doing donuts with our rev limiter blaring Waa da da da da da! LOL

It is so so funny to see them come out of thier rooms at 1 am and watch us.

the only thing that sucked about that place was we only had about 5 minutes to do our thing or the cops would be on us.

We had to be extremely careful in that town it was crawling with pigs and they were ruthless on me and my import friends!

I probably payed 600 to 700$ worth in tickets over the 4 years i lived in that town :tisk:

it was alot of fun though!

here in toronto, all roads are strait, so hard to find good s curves.

The only fun i ever really have is comming home from hockey at 3 in the morning and i know up in the boonies ther are no cops in my neiborhood so i do power turns everyware.... but still so hard to catch a brake.

if i had millions of dollars i would buy a crack load of property and build a race track in my area, those government fat cats dont realize the potential!!!

manji drifting is basically controlled fishtailing, if I'm not mistaken
