My parents have been talking about redoing the floor of their deck for at least two summers. My mom finally demanded that the work be done this spring. So I thought I'd tackle the project myself. And since my rates beat all the contractors I talked to, my parents gave me the green light. It took me about 2 weeks (working about 3 hours most days with a couple of all day stints. I'm quite proud of the results. My dad did help a bit, but mostly played the foreman role.

You can see how bad the decking was. Its about 20 years old and hadnt been treated in years.

Finished! I still have to redo the stairs before this weekend...

What do you guys think??

I cant remember if it came from my Dad or the Lowes guy, but someone said to let it weather for a few weeks before sealing it.

The lumber (5/4x6 PT pine) cost about $500. Plus another $100 for screws and some smaller tools. We also got a cordless reciprocating saw and a second, more powerful cordless drill.

The deck is about 32x14 ft.

Looks great. I need to add a deck to my house. Big house, but no deck, and a crappy yard.

you guys should look into TREX decking too. Its made from recycled plastic or something, and doesn't require treatments, although it isn't as stiff or structurally supportive, so I think the supports have to be closer together according to code. That deck looks nice tho!

The composite boards cost 4 times the price of regular PT pine. Its nice, but pretty expensive. I'd definitely consider it if I was building a deck on a new house...
